  • GG Codes for Super Mario Bros. (minus Duck Hunt) - NES

    Hi everybody!

    I haven't forgotten about you guys... I just got caught up with other projects

    Here's an embarrassing anecdote relating to this particular game. Back in the day--before I owned a Game Genie--I used to take my Super Mario Bros. cartridge and rub it into the carpet, to see what effects it would have. Soon after that, I discovered the slightly more advanced technique of placing bits of tape or stickers on the individual pins. Lots of cool effects were to be had, none of which were predictable. I figured my SMB cart could be abused, since it was pretty much all played out anyway. Unfortunately (as you can very well imagine), this bad practice wreaked havoc on my NES, and probably contributed to its progressive decline

    With today's technology, hacking has become a much more refined pastime. I no longer have to resort to deplorable measures to get interesting results; I can actually target specific areas of these games! I hope you enjoy these codes
    Code:
    ~~~ Fireball Manipulation ~~~
    Fireball Nose Sword
    ALULLTEI
    IAUUPTPA
    ALUUITEI
    [B]NOTE: Press B while equipped with the fireflower to have a fire sword of death coming out of your nose.[/B]
    Toss Fireballs Over Your Head.
    KNULGTGE
    [B]Note: Fireballs will exit your person at an ascending arc, meaning you can now hit targets /above/ you.[/B]
    Control Your Fireball's Descent With A or B
    SXKLLVOZ
    ZEKLGTAS
    [B]NOTE: Shoot a fireball, and it will bounce off the ground and keep going up. Press A or B on its ascent, and it will fall. Its rate of descent is proportionate to the length of time the A or B buttons are pressed. B=descend some; A=descend more; A+B=descend a lot.
    [/B]
    Fireballs Have Near-Horizontal Movement
    AEKUATLA
    [B]NOTE: Their descent is minimal, roughly 1/2 block of fall for every 12 blocks traveled.[/B]
    Fireballs Fly Perfectly Straight
    NNKLGTAS
    AEKUATLA
    [B]NOTE: Enable this cheat before you get fireballs.[/B]
    Fireballs Bounce Through Solid Objects
    PENTIPEA
    [B]NOTE: Use this cheat to hit enemies behind walls.[/B]
    Can Shoot Fireballs While Crouched (you'll pop up briefly)
    ALKLYTEI
    Code:
    ~~~ Flying ~~~

    * Fly With Button Combo A + B
    ZASLPKIO
    EGSLLGLA
    [B]NOTE: Hold both A & B to enable flight. Press UP to float upward, DOWN to float downward, and LEFT/RIGHT to travel horizontally. Quite possibly the best flying cheat configuration, though it should be used with invincibility to avoid infinite hang time at the time of death.[/B]

    * Fly With D-Pad UP
    LASLPKIO
    AASLLGLE
    [B]NOTE: Hold UP to fly upward & LEFT/RIGHT to move about. Use with invincibility to avoid infinite hang time at the time of death.[/B]

    * Fly With Button A
    ZASLPKIO
    EASLLGLA
    ALSLGGEI
    [B]NOTE: Hold the A button to enable flight. Press UP to float upward, DOWN to float downward, and LEFT/RIGHT to move laterally. Use with invincibility to avoid an interminable hang time at the time of your unfortunate demise.[/B]

    * Fly After Jumping
    PASLLGLA
    [B]NOTE: The simplest, yet worst flying cheat. Jump to start flying. Use the LEFT/RIGHT buttons to move about. This cheat must be disabled often to progress through the game, otherwise you'll become stuck.[/B]
    Code:
    ~~~ Player-Landscape Interaction ~~~
    Walk RIGHT Into Any Solid Object To Enter Sub Areas
    ENKSKIEI
    [B]NOTE: It's the same as walking RIGHT into an active pipe. Very useful for exploration. Deactivate after flagpoles.[/B]
    Press DOWN Anywhere To Enter Sub Areas
    OXVSVTSX
    POVSNTAA
    OXNIKTSX
    AONISTPA
    [B]NOTE: It's the same as pressing DOWN on an active pipe. Useful for exploration, although the Walk Right cheat is easier to utilize and is effectively the same as this one. To be toggled.[/B]
    Destroy Blocks With Your Head
    EOKSOGEL
    [B]NOTE: Just jump up into any block, and it will simply disappear. You won't be able to collect powerups, but your coin meter will go up. Useful for exploration.[/B]
    Destroy Blocks With Body
    ESXSKIEL
    [B]NOTE: Just walk into blocks to destroy them and collect coins. Useful for exploration. Deactivate after flagpoles.[/B]
    Destroy Most Blocks With Your Feet
    ALEIKIEL
    [B]NOTE: Try this cheat whenever you find yourself stuck on some platform. You'll collect coins as you fall. Useful for exploration.[/B]
    Code:
    ~~~ Misc. ~~~

    Can Move LEFT or RIGHT While Crouched
    APXLLPEY
    [B]NOTE: Hold DOWN while pressing LEFT or RIGHT. Great for getting into those tight places. It looks like you're skateboarding ;)[/B]

    Bubbles Emanate From Player's Mouth
    ALNLPTEI
    [B]NOTE: Rabid sewer animals can apparently transmit their diseases to Italian plumbers.[/B]
    Code:
    ~~~ Landscape Modification ~~~
    All Background Elements (hills, clouds, fences, etc.) Become Breakable Bricks
    OZKPIKSU
    PIKPTKXA
    XTKPYGUO
    [B]NOTE: You /might/ not be able to pass certain areas with this, but it's a fun cheat nevertheless ;) Best used before a level begins.[/B]
    Castle Land!
    AUXOPIEY
    [B]NOTE: You can't complete the game with this cheat alone. Perhaps with other ones... or maybe not. It looks cool though! Best used before a level begins.[/B]
    Many Item/Coin Boxes Replaced With Powerups
    OXNPPIOU
    AENPZINT
    [B]NOTE: Most item or coin blocks can now power you up. Some things hidden in bricks will become apparent. However, the side pipe at the end of 2-2 will be replaced with an item block, so you will need the "Walk Right" pipe cheat. Best used before a level begins.
    [/B]
    Landscape Feature Replacement: Mushroom Platforms
    OZEOATSX
    APEOPTAA
    [B]NOTE: Many objects are replaced by mushroom platforms. As with most of these types of cheats, the game can't be beat using it alone. It's best used before a level begins.[/B]
    Landscape Feature Replacement: Brick Structures #1
    OZEOATSX
    AZEOPTAA
    [B]NOTE: Many objects are replaced by brick structures. I think you can beat the entire game with this, but I haven't tried to yet. These will become coral structures in the underwater levels. Best used before a level begins.
    [/B]
    Landscape Feature Replacement: Brick Structures #2
    OZEOATSX
    AIEOPTAA
    [B]NOTE: Many objects are replaced by different brick structures. The game might be beatable with this. These will become coral structures in the underwater levels. Best used before a level begins.[/B]
    Brick Replacement: Axes
    EZXOVXKZ
    IZXONXTG
    XTUPEZYE
    [B]NOTE: Many regular bricks will be replaced with axes that you can climb onto. You cannot jump up through them, though. Best used before a level begins.[/B]
    Block Multiplier x 2
    PAKOUZAA
    [B]NOTE: Many blocks will be doubled vertically. Twice the fun! Best used before a level begins.[/B]
    Block Multiplier x 3
    ZAKOUZAA
    [B]NOTE: Many blocks will be tripled vertically. Triple the fun, although I doubt you can get through the whole game with it... but for all I know you might be the first! Best used before a level begins.[/B]
    Objects Are Set Right Above The Ground
    OXUOVLOU
    POUONLNV
    [B]NOTE: Most block structures will be "flattened" and set right above the ground. Try it out on the mushroom platform levels. Best used before a level begins.[/B]
    Object Macro Extension Modifier
    OXKPSLOU
    ??KPVLN(T/V)
    [B]NOTE: Extends all object (block) macros to the specified amount. Affects just about everything, including the length of pits. The effect is caused by a direct overwrite across the board, so a value that makes one feature normal will make another abnormal.[/B]
    Object Macro Extension Example
    OXKPSLOU
    IZKPVLNT
    [B]NOTE: Objects macros will be set to a value of 25. With the "Walk Right" pipe cheat, you can /probably/ beat the game with this. [/B]
    Happy Gaming!
      I always like your codes. Nice job. By the way, so far, every code I've tested has also worked for the SMB + Duck Hunt cartridge
          Super Mario Bros. + Duck Hunt + World Class Track Meet (USA) (Rev A)
          Super Mario Bros. + Duck Hunt + World Class Track Meet (USA)
              Thanks, everyone!
              Yeah, these cheats do appear to work with the Duck Hunt version as well, though I haven't tested every single one. At one point while writing my personal log, I switched titles. Some codes didn't work with the SMB-only cart, but for the most part, the addresses appear to be the same.
              Data Crystal only had RAM addresses for "Super Mario Bros. (JU) (PRG0) [!].nes," so I went with it.
              DC is a great resource for hackers, though sometimes their information is scant. Their SMB RAM map page is fairly extensive though. That's how I found the code section for the landscape modification stuff. It's also fun to just browse addresses for inspiration
                I like these codes. I like also your "Can Move LEFT or RIGHT While Crouched" code - it is very cool and useful.
                @BeyondTheStatic, whether is possible you make also a codes:
                • fireballs thrown by Fire Mario / Luigi travels on surface of ground;
                • Koopas's and Paratroopa Koopas's shells moves slowly after they're kicked by Mario or Luigi (I found a code for this - APAPTI made by an unknown hacker, but I don't see it to work);
                • Mario and Luigi can stay onto clouds in background (a code for this also already exists - EPASUX made by any hacker called "Yetiho" but it won't let you to pass the water levels as World 2-2).
                    I tried these many of these codes out last night. They are awesome. Who'd of thought that they could make more. I especially like the triple stack codes. When you go into a bonus pipe, there's a pit below. Going up the vine causes you to collect even more coins.
                    Would it possible to make these same codes for SMB1 for Super Mario All-Stars on SNES?
                        Did you mean "APAPTI?" That code only works for SMB1+Duck Hunt. I couldn't find a comparable cheat for the SMB-only cart. I remember discovering a similar cheat a long time ago, back when I used to find things the hard way. It worked for all background elements, like trees, hills, castles and the like. Lost my code book though, which sucks royal ass. Can't even find it for this game; to do so might require going back to the old ways of plugging in every_possible_character_combination, which I am not prepared to do. I'll keep trying.
                        [B]NOTE: Enemies still retain their basic appearance (and some of their dynamics)... but now they ALL wield hammers, jump, and target YOU specifically! They'll often alter their animations while throwing hammers, and will sometimes kill themselves.                         YONGZOOT
                        [B]NOTE: Probably not so difficult.. until it is. Pirahna plants, fire bars and Bowser are all unaffected. Will take effect as new enemies are loaded.[/B]
                        ~~~ Misc. ~~~
                        Powerups Keep Rising
                        ASKLOGEP
                        [B]NOTE: They'll continue to rise into the air when they should have stayed put. Sometimes they fall suddenly after reaching the top of the screen, and other times you can't grab 'em even when you do catch up with the suckers.

                          It's possible, but it would take me a helluva long time to do it. The NES has The Best hacking tool for any retro system: FCEUX. Hacking utilities for other systems are simply horrible. I work mainly with the code/data logger and trace logger. I can get real-time updates when new code is executed, or a big file when want it (both are best). I want to know when something has changed. Your standard cheat searches really don't tell you everything

                              Did you mean "APAPTI?" That code only works for SMB1+Duck Hunt. I couldn't find a comparable cheat for the SMB-only cart. I remember discovering a similar cheat a long time ago, back when I used to find things the hard way. It worked for all background elements, like trees, hills, castles and the like. Lost my code book though, which sucks royal ass. Can't even find it for this game; to do so might require going back to the old ways of plugging in every_possible_character_combination, which I am not prepared to do. I'll keep trying.
                              that code works for me on a SMB only cart and game genie
