In regards to a "rewards" system, I might suggest collaborative bounties. The bounty system works like this:
1) A (non-exhaustive) list of important (wanted) features/bug fixes/what have you are compiled.
2) Project drivers decide what each of these might be worth. (E.G. "'Implement Python scripting' is worth $500USD")
3) Money is raised through donations.
4) Items are completed to satisfaction by volunteers.
5) ???
6) PROFIT!
