My dad was using the computer both times it happened. Not blaming him, but it must be some site he is visiting. I am suspicious that the virus came from advertisements on Yahoo Finance both times.

Luckily I can probably get most of the files back that I downloaded since my last backup, and the personal documents I lost this time weren't that important.

It won't cost me any money this time, but it will cost me hours and hours of my free time.

Do image backup of the whole HDD using something like Norton Ghost once you have everything installed how you like it. Next time this happens it will be much quicker to restore it.

You could try searching for "System Restore" in your programs, you can pick a restore point prior to when the malware was aqquired and it should get rid of it without ruining any documents or media etc. Might get rid of any recently installed programs though.

The virus deletes all system restore points, volume shadow copies, and securely deletes each file it encrypts so file recovery software can't retrieve the original deleted files.

Yes, I'm going to do this. I'm just going to make a sector by sector copy of my hard drive every few weeks, and store it offline so it can't get infected.
