As a kid, I hoped that a special message would be displayed if I beat (SNES) Zelda without using saves and having a "0" displayed next to my character's name.
Now broadcasting from the underground command post. Deep in the bowels of a hidden bunker. Somewhere under the brick & steel of a nondescript building. We've once again made contact w/ our leader, OSG

Ya we all hoped for special things (Naked Samus when completing Super Metroid in under 30 mins ) when beating these games in the most efficient way possible. There is a hidden message in "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" that can be viewed here. Unfortunately, that's the only special message hidden within it (this was removed from the GBA version oddly, but the room still exists).

GSHI, Kodewerx, and Tony's Hedstrom's 'The Code Hut' has some good hacking guides.

Towards the bottom of the page, there is a "How To" section, check it out: http://codehut.gshi.org/NES.htm
