  • Stuff that should be improved on the new site.

I haven't spent much time with the new site because I know I'm going to find a lot of annoyances and I'm going to lose my mind. But anyways, this is what I've found so far:

    1) On the old site, when adding codes you could click on the + / - signs to add more code fields. It was positioned on top, which was perfect because you could click all you wanted and everything populated below. On the new site, the button to add more code fields is in the bottom, which means that every time you click on it, the screen shifts and you have to scroll down every single time you want to add a new code field.
Solution: place the button on top like it was on the old site.

    2) When adding codes, it forces me to enter my hacker name for credit. On the old site my name was automatically entered.

    3) On the old site, when adding codes, if you clicked on the + / - signs to add more code fields, the code fields would populate with some of the information from the original code field already entered (such as Group name, hacker name, code type, etc). On the new site the new code fields start up empty.

    4) There's something wrong with the search engine through the bar on top.
For example: I type F-Zero, F Zero or Fzero and I get zero results. Now, on the screen with the field that says "find" (after you get zero results), that one gives me the correct results. So obviously there's something strange with the search engine.

*edit* Ok the search bar is complete broken. Any game I search, I get zero results. Also, there seems to have been a downgrade with the search recognition. For example, I type "final fantasy 5" and I get no results, I have to type "final fantasy v" (roman numeral) to get results.

These are all reasonable requests. I'll work on these next time I work on the site.

Plus, I've seen a couple of these before, thanks for organizing them into this post for me.
Please put all complaints in writing and submit them here.

One more thing while you're looking to do some fixes, could you make it so when adding multiple codes (Admins and maybe a Chronicler problem) it transfers the Code Name into the new code from the one I have entered before hitting the "Add" button which I think should be blank for the new code. Plus I would like it to transfer the hacker name to the next code and not the code name, the code type and encryption transfer is fine though.
      Spoiler Alert! Click to view...

Did 1,2,3. The new code will inherit the hackers, group, type, and encrypted check of whichever code you press the + on.

I'll look at the search functions at a different time.

        Edit:
I fixed the f-zero thing, and made sure the search posts when searching from the top of the page. However, I don't remember ever integrating roman numeral conversion in my search algorithm.

          Thanks.
Would it be possible to separate the +/- a little bit from one another? The icons are too small and I've hit the minus sign twice now when trying to hit the plus one :P

Well on the old site I never had to enter roman numerals for games with roman numerals. I always entered regular numbers and it recognized both as numbers.

Not sure if I should create a new thread since these are minor issues, but...

            1) A register button should be present to guests.
            2) The welcoming text adjacent to your avatar alters its position depending on if you're on the main page or the forum. I'm not sure if this was intentional.
            3) The code boxes (BBC) should have a greater length before showing the scroll bars.
I only bother with things that interest me.

I think this thread can be used to report or request things to be added or changed before rimsky gets fed up :P

Do you have any example for #3? I can't quite understand what you mean.

Rimsky would know what I mean.

                Here's an example:

You shouldn't have to scroll in a text/code box with four new lines.

Ah, I see. Didn't know we were talking about the forum.

                  I have another observation.

I actually mentioned this months ago when you were looking for input on the new design, and you said it bothered you too. I know you have a "to do" list, but I don't see it there. So I'll peat it again:

How the notes are displayed really bothers me. Let me see if I can explain myself. On the old design, when you viewed the notes, there was a box with "Breakdown" spelled on top, a divider line, and then "Notes" in bold. On the new site, there's nothing that tells me, in bold, which is the Breakdown and which are the Notes. Not to mention that there are multiple divider lines, which makes it even harder still to tell which exactly is the note or which is the breakdown.
I additionally believe the Notes box should be on the right (like it was), and not to the left. But I guess I could live with it as long as there's something that distinguishes the notes from the codeinfo.

The code field is getting squashed in some pages, take a look:
                    http://gamehacking.org/game/4582

Maybe because too much real state is being devoted to the name field?

Also, most of the codes are missing credit. Maybe it was listed as Unknown before?
There's a user claiming that there are codes missing from that link too. There used to be some item codes, and they are not listed anymore.

I plan on redesigning the code list and the code details. Just not exactly sure how just yet, but I have some ideas.

Yes, the squashing is because of the title field. A new design will take care of this, because I may not use an html table anymore. As far as the missing codes/credit, I'm not sure. I assure you no codes were deleted, so if they're not showing up it's a bug in the SQL syntax.

Everything else in this thread up to this point should be good.

                        Thanks, understood.

Is there any way to see the old site to check if the codes were also missing credit? I tried archive.org, but it had nothing.

Honestly it shouldn't be any different, because I don't believe I changed the SQL at all. Only the design, and added a couple of things to the filtering. It's the same database, there shouldn't be any differences.

                              Another request:

When on a code page, on the top menu where it says "Add - Download Codes - Selected". Is it possible for the options in the drop down menu to be a little less close together or at least have a bigger font? Every time I'm going to edit several codes I'm afraid I'm going to accidentally hit Delete since the font is smaller (or closer together?) than the previous design.

And on the "Add" drop down menu, the options appear too far too the left (instead of directly below), and instinctively, you move the mouse cursor over the actual word to add a Group or Code, but when you do that, the menu goes away. To avoid that, you have to move the mouse cursor directly down, but it's not really intuitive since you're pointing at a blank space.

The solution, in my opinion, would be to align the options in the drop down menu to the right, instead of to the left.
