  • Sega Seeking New Mascot Since Sonic Has Been Ruined By Fans

    p4rgaming

Sega has recently announced a contest to create a mascot to represent their new Sega Raw show. They say that Sonic the Hedgehog can not be used because his perception has been ruined by fans.

“Hosting the show with Sonic the Hedgehog would have ruined it,” asserts Sega’s chief creative officer and host of Sega Raw Toshihiro Nagoshi, “I don’t want certain types of people watching the show. This show is meant for true Sega fans only, not Sonic the Hedgehog fans.”

Nagoshi is most well known for producing the Super Monkey Ball and Yakuza games. He speaks very fondly of his position saying, “I am blessed to have worked on such beloved Sega franchises. I just feel bad for those at Sonic Team although maybe a lot of them stay on for the privilege of working on Phantasy Star.”

“This new mascot will eventually replace Sonic the Hedgehog as Sega’s main mascot,” mentions Nagoshi, “The show is merely a test run for him or her. Granted, I’m sure anything we choose will be better than Sonic the Hedgehog. I don’t know why so many horrible people latched onto him and not Mario.”

“We do realize that we are probably going to receive a lot of terrible submissions from people who will submit something like name-goes-here the animal,” admits Nagoshi, “We’re looking for a needle in a haystack essentially. A needle that will not ruin Sega’s image from fans making disturbing fan work of it.”

When asked what Sega will do with Sonic the Hedgehog after he is retired as a mascot, Nagoshi replied, “Lock him up in the vault with Alex Kidd.”

I'm a little baffled since I haven't played a single Sonic game since the Sega Genesis. People have "ruined" Sonic and made "disturbing" things of Sonic, and he doesn't want "certain types" of people watching. I haven't seen any disturbing Sonic stuff around even though I haven't looked, but I haven't really heard anything about Nintendo flipping out about people making Mario porn or something. I'm lost. All I can guess is they don't want Sonic since they had made Sonic games for Nintendo and want something exclusive to Sega only.

You don't have to look. If you ever read any comedy websites, you'll be exposed to the ridiculous fan productions that revolve around Sonic. There are fan-created mutations like Sonichu, which is an excessively long, self-insert, fan-fiction by a man with mental disorders; mundane furry stuff, more adult furry stuff, gray area mixtures of furry and pedophilia, and on and on. While Nintendo properties aren't spared, and I'm sure I haven't seen all of the sewage on offer, it seems like Sonic comes in for more horrors.

I don't see that any of that necessitates changing mascots, though. If everybody in the entertainment industries took their ball and went home whenever somebody perverted their work, we'd probably all be getting most of our non-rerun entertainment from mildly erotic, "What's Happening" fan-fiction.

Thanks for the heads up, can't believe I fell for that.

The line "This show is meant for true Sega fans only, not Sonic the Hedgehog fans.” is what really bugged me, I mean SEGA probably wouldn't be as famous without Sonic in the first place, Sonic IS SEGA.

So this story is fake, correct? It would be ridiculous if it was true and that they would actually let perverts force the hand of major company decisions.

(I, also, have never seen any negative Sonic the Hedgehog images. I guess one would have to visit pretty immature websites to be exposed to those perverted Sonic the Hedgehog images.)

"Immature", says the man with the ToeJam and Earl signature.

It took me a moment to even think of 1 Sonic thing floating around on the internet. I forgot about the old Blonic videos I saw a while back, they made me laugh, along with that user's "Iron Bad" video. https://www.youtube.com/user/Ukinojoe

I wouldn't even want to know what 4chan has had for Sonic over time.

I'm pretty sure the /b/ros are more obsessed with My Little Pony and furries than Sonic.
I only bother with things that interest me.

Perhaps SEGA ruined Sonic, not Sonic's "fans," hmm? I mean, have you guys played Sonic Rush for the DS? What a big-ass disappointment that game was. Its J-pop soundtrack combined with boring + annoying level designs really made that game a bummer. They should have brought back that 16-bit feeling by keeping to the game's successful elements. Take Sonic 2's Aquatic Ruin Zone, for instance. Best music in the series, IMO, and made for some memorable gaming moments. Sonic Rush, OTOH, was only like a distant echo of something great.

Well said, but I think the best level in Sonic 2 is that pinball/casino/slot machine level (forgot the exact name of the level). That level was so good it actually inspired an entire Sonic game... Sonic Spinball. I remember playing that level when I was a kid and totally forgetting about completing the level and I was just playing around with the pinball/casino/slot machine thingies.
