A man drank 56 shots of alcohol to beat a bar record of 55, but he died later that night from a heart attack. The bar owner is now charged with his death and he is on trial for “manslaughter by wilful neglect.”
A 57 year old man who died of cardiac arrest after downing 56 shots of alcohol at a French bar was continuously served even when demonstrating extreme intoxication. Today the blame for this man’s death is pointing to the bar owner, who not only served him all this alcohol in one sitting, but egged him on to do so, according to News Max on May 7.
The unnamed barkeep is on trial for “manslaughter by willful neglect” in the death of this man. This is a charge he is fighting in court with his lawyers.
A man named Renaud drank the 56 shots of alcohol in October at a bar called Le Starter. The bar is located in Clermont-Ferrand, a French town in a country setting. Renaud had 14 shots with his friends before he decided to take on the previous bar record of shots consumed, which was 55. He then drank shot after shot and at one point, he put down 30 shots in under a minute.
Some of the shots are referred to as "shooters" because they were mixed and not straight liquor, but they still had a shot of liquor in them and counted towards the record. He needed 12 shots more for the record after he drank the original 14 and then the 30 shots he put down in under a minute. With 44 shots under his belt, he downed another 12 and broke the record by 1 shot with 56, according to The Gawker today.
The entire time he downed this alcohol he was cheered on by his friends and family as he tried to break the previous bar record. He continued on drinking until he could drink no more and was carried home by the entourage of folks he had come to the bar with. By the time he was done he had consumed about a liter of alcohol, according to The Gawker.
Renaud's daughter, who was with her father at the bar when her father put down the 56 shots, overheard the bar owner make a comment after her father finished those 30 shots in under a minute. She claims the bar owner whispered to her father that he only had “12 to go” to break the previous record. The prosecutor is claiming that the bar owner enticed this man to continue drinking.
Renaud broke the record by consuming the 56 shots of alcohol, but by the time he was done, he was beyond incoherent. It was later that evening that he had a cardiac arrest and died.
Antoine Portal, the lawyer for Renaud's unnamed daughter, maintains that his client’s father was “not in a fit state to understand what he was doing.” The bar owner is accused of inciting Renaud to drink and more importantly he is accused of continuing to serve this extremely inebriated man.
