  • Man Dies After Downing 56 Shots Of Alcohol

    By Roz Zurko

A man drank 56 shots of alcohol to beat a bar record of 55, but he died later that night from a heart attack. The bar owner is now charged with his death and he is on trial for “manslaughter by wilful neglect.”

A 57 year old man who died of cardiac arrest after downing 56 shots of alcohol at a French bar was continuously served even when demonstrating extreme intoxication. Today the blame for this man’s death is pointing to the bar owner, who not only served him all this alcohol in one sitting, but egged him on to do so, according to News Max on May 7.

The unnamed barkeep is on trial for “manslaughter by willful neglect” in the death of this man. This is a charge he is fighting in court with his lawyers.

A man named Renaud drank the 56 shots of alcohol in October at a bar called Le Starter. The bar is located in Clermont-Ferrand, a French town in a country setting. Renaud had 14 shots with his friends before he decided to take on the previous bar record of shots consumed, which was 55. He then drank shot after shot and at one point, he put down 30 shots in under a minute.

Some of the shots are referred to as "shooters" because they were mixed and not straight liquor, but they still had a shot of liquor in them and counted towards the record. He needed 12 shots more for the record after he drank the original 14 and then the 30 shots he put down in under a minute. With 44 shots under his belt, he downed another 12 and broke the record by 1 shot with 56, according to The Gawker today.

The entire time he downed this alcohol he was cheered on by his friends and family as he tried to break the previous bar record. He continued on drinking until he could drink no more and was carried home by the entourage of folks he had come to the bar with. By the time he was done he had consumed about a liter of alcohol, according to The Gawker.

Renaud's daughter, who was with her father at the bar when her father put down the 56 shots, overheard the bar owner make a comment after her father finished those 30 shots in under a minute. She claims the bar owner whispered to her father that he only had “12 to go” to break the previous record. The prosecutor is claiming that the bar owner enticed this man to continue drinking.

Renaud broke the record by consuming the 56 shots of alcohol, but by the time he was done, he was beyond incoherent. It was later that evening that he had a cardiac arrest and died.

Antoine Portal, the lawyer for Renaud's unnamed daughter, maintains that his client’s father was “not in a fit state to understand what he was doing.” The bar owner is accused of inciting Renaud to drink and more importantly he is accused of continuing to serve this extremely inebriated man.

The guy didn't die of a heart attack. It was ALCOHOL POISONING, plain and simple. More proof that the more of the stuff you drink, the dumber you get. Seriously, why do people keep trying to emulate Andre the Giant (who once consumed 119 beers in a single sitting)?

Andre could do it because of how big he was. If I drink 2 or 3 old fashioned glasses of Bourbon or Scotch I can go to sleep for hours. I could never drink 56 shots of liquor.

P.S. Whenever doctors don't know what the real cause of death is, they always say that it was a heart attack.

You'll still occasionally see "died of natural causes" on some obituaries, usually of very elderly people (e.g. those past the age of 80). Other times you'll read "cause of death could not be determined" for particularly bizarre incidents involving sudden deaths of otherwise healthy (often young) individuals, and "foul play not implicated" may also be added.

The man's blood-alcohol percentage may have approached 1.0 (as in, more than twice the amount needed to kill someone, traditionally said to be around .40), in which case the man may have not just been killed by alcohol poisoning, but an actual dilution of his blood due to the extreme amount of alcohol in his system.

There are actually WORSE ways to die, and I don't want to get into too much macabre detail. Trust me...my mind is a rather dark, morbid and twisted place at times...heh heh.

Well, the immediate cause of death could have been a heart attack. Alcohol poisoning is known to cause them, and without an autopsy the doctor that did the initial exam might not have wanted to be more specific. But yeah, you don't drink 56 shots that quickly with no ill effects.

I wish I remembered how many years ago when I read about some guy found with a .96 blood alcohol level and he survived. He just drank endlessly and ate nothing but fish. That was over 10 years ago, I've forgotten, was probably a load of crap too because I didn't really look into it much at the time.

There are exceptions to quite a few general rules, like people who survived hitting the ground after their parachute failed, or kids who survived after eating a box of rat poison. That story is probably apocryphal or based on a faulty or misremembered measurement, but who knows.

Hell, what happened to the 55 shots guy from dlevere's story? Unless he did it over the course of 24 hours, he was probably skating the edge of death or permanent damage too. I'd like to think the media and the police would look into previous incidents at that bar, because this could be an interesting method of getting away with serial murder.

As far as I can recall, the (possibly former) Guinness record for highest BAC ever recorded in a surviving individual was for a Polish woman who was found to have a BAC of 1.3 (!). Even more remarkable was the fact that she was still CONSCIOUS, but confused and nearly incoherent of speech.

I do NOT condone such records myself, and would never attempt something of this nature, nor do I suggest anyone else do so, unless you want to kiss your liver (and likely your LIFE) good-bye.
