  • Wireless Nintendo 64 Pads Due For Summer Release

    By Richard Mitchell

Everyone was talking about the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U during E3 this year, but the highlight of the Innex booth wanted nothing to do with these newfangled gadgets. I'm talking about Retro-Bit's Wireless Hypermode controllers for the N64.

I got a chance to try out one of these controllers with the original Super Smash Bros – serendipitously right before my interview with its creator, Masahiro Sakurai – and it seemed to work swimmingly. I didn't notice any significant input latency, and was able to perform smash attacks without any trouble (as Samus, obviously).

I doubt I spent more than five minutes with it, so I can't speak to longterm concerns like connectivity issues or battery life, but the initial impression was definitely a positive one. The build quality felt good, though not as high as official Nintendo controllers. The analog stick in particular felt like it didn't have as much weight or resistance to it as an official pad – more or less how you would expect a third-party controller to feel.

Connection is achieved via a receiver plugged into the console's controller ports. The receiver has a connection button and a slot for a memory card or Rumble Pak. Obviously you won't be feeling any of those rumbles from across your living room, but at least the option is there for any games that require the Rumble function (like finding secrets in Ocarina of Time, etc).

The Wireless Hypermode N64 controller is slated to arrive this summer for $30. A Genesis version and an NES/SNES hybrid version are panned for this fall at the same price.

I am sooo glad I just got a full time job. I might actually purchase this, it looks good. I would just like to know how long the batteries last in it. I'd also like to know how sturdy it is too, as I have had problems with the control sticks and other buttons messing up with the original wired N64 controllers in the past. It looks very well designed and comfortable to use.

    Thanks for sharing this!
    I'm retired from code hacking.
    I do not take requests!

All I really want is a decent wired N64 pad with a stick that won't wear out. I have some third-party pads but they all have other problems.

There is a guide to build your own n64, snes, nes, saturn wireless pads on http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=4393.0 . I plan to build me some and have ordered some of the parts already but I'm currently designing a pcb to manufacture so it looks professional and will fit nicely in the pads casing. I'm on a pcb designing rush right now and making all sorts of mods for the retro consoles like a pcb to output RGB aka Component video from Snes and other consoles and is universal in a way.

How would you describe it's responsivness? i am more intrested on that than naything else i own two third party controllers and the sticks are hyper sensititve or hyper un sensitive making games like BK and BT unplayable.

No clue on that one, but I'll see what I can find out.

Richard Mitchell of Joystiq was able to try a test unit of the controller at E3. Although he admits that he only tested it for less than 5 minutes, Mitchell says that the controller’s didn’t seem too bad, although it’s not quite as good as the official controller.

hmm, i would be sold if i had some sort of opinion on how it plays with zelda and BK and BT, because otherwise i am on the fence, given the controllers i have are of the pelican brand and they suck.

That's the good thing about that mod I linked to, it uses the original pad so its quality is good. On that same forum the guy who made the mod also is selling a pcb if you dont want to make your own that makes these 3rd party n64 sticks work with all games and reduce the sensitivity of the stick to mimic the actual n64's stick.

in one is an actual hardware problem, the stick is so hard that it's impossible to make a subtle move, i have a pseudo working controller only that some of the cable ends snapped inside the controller and my uncle is too lazy to try to solder it and i lack experience to attempt soldering.
