Yesterday, I stumbled upon an article on cheating and hacking in video games, by Feross Aboukhadijeh, a computer science student at Stanford University. It was a fairly short piece of work, and didn't go into much detail, but I liked its portrayal of hacking as being positive unless it adversely affects the experience of other players (online hacking, etc).
I sent him an email to thank him for the article, which apparently reminded him that he'd forgotten to publish the finished version. It's now up on his blog, and it's a good read:
Cheating in Video Games!
On a side note, his blog in general is cool, and the guy's a genius. He created Instant.fm, and co-created YouTube Instant, which won him fame, an article in just about every technical and computing magazine, site, and blog out there, and a job offer from the founder of YouTube. Drop by his blog and pay homage: HERE

Due to recent events in the hacking scene, I will be stepping back into GSHI as Executive Administrator. LiquidManZero will remain in the same position as well.
Kodewerx is on the brink of vanishing. With the tragic loss of ugetab, my recent departure, and various other events, GSHI has become nearly dormant. CMP grows quiet. Even the relatively new WiiRD community isn't anywhere near as active as it should be. The smaller, more personal sites such as Hacking101 and CheatersLounge are suffering the same fate. What's more, we're fragmented; there's no real continuity between sites, and only some members visit more than one regularly.
Something must be done to bring the scene together, or we will crumble and fall. Any hacking site that fails must be preserved, either by re-hosting, new administration, archiving, or some combination of these. And a bridge must be built between the remaining sites, to foster a new era of hacking and collaboration. Hopefully I can do my part to facilitate these.
Any help is appreciated, and ideas are welcome. Feel free to send me a PM on the forums. I'll be speaking with the owners of the other sites personally, so if your thoughts have merit, they will be voiced to them as well.

Well, it's certainly been a while since anything major has happened. I've been taking a break from the scene, Artemis development has halted, and there hasn't been much hacking going on.
Granted, this is the holiday season, so perhaps everyone's been busy with real life, but I'm beginning to accept that with Artemis once again dormant, WiiRD is the only shining glimmer of hope for the future of hacking.
I've been playing a lot of PS3 games lately, and it pains me to lack the ability to hack something, the way it pained me for the PS2 (and still does, for those games Artemis can't tear asunder). I hope Datel has devs/hackers/engineers working long hours in dark rooms with logic analyzers, disassemblers, and hundreds of milligrams of caffeine to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
Until then, I suppose there are still thousands of great, unhacked codes to be born on a myriad of retro and pseudo-current-gen systems (and the Wii), hacking guides to be written, and general tomfoolery to be set in motion for our cheap entertainment. And we can always toss together mental lists of things to-be-hacked-when-possible for our beloved, unhackable systems. At least a good amount of the games themselves are decent, which I haven't been able to say since the dawn of the PSX.
Come to think of it, I guess things aren't so bad for the time being. Thanks for cheering me up, guys. I needed it

We've also added a few alternate themes, including my personal favorite, Morbid Blueberry (which, thanks to JNABK, now has a minimal GSHI.org logo as well), and another light GSHI theme by JNABK. A big thanks goes out to JNABK for working on these, and to Ace for adding them.

ugetab won the Hacking Competition, with a perfect 30/30
He has chosen to pass his prizes down to Pugsy (who also received a perfect 30/30, but submitted later than ugetab), who himself elected to pass his codes to Whipon (who received an almost perfect 28/30).
Congrats to all those who excelled in this year's anniversary contest, and keep an eye open for next year's events, which will be even more challenging (and likely yield even better prizes).

Several new revs of PS2CC have been released by Viper187, and PS2 hacking is now even more streamlined
Also, Jimmikaelkael's IGMassDumper works like a charm. IGMD allows you to dump EE memory to a USB flash drive. Couple that with the fact that GTLCPimp has apparently made considerable progress with in-game display of graphics (though it's still currently buggy), and bungholio's ASM memory scanner/comparison tool, and we're getting closer to having a PS2-side hacking system as well

From the Artemis BountySource page:
Jimmikaelkael has added remote value patching to Core_LauncherV2, and Viper187 has thus implemented it in PS2CC. In other words: for games that Artemis is compatible with (about 50% of games, currently), we can now search for codes, and test the results until we find the codes we’re looking for

The Hacking Competition has begun!
Details can be found here:
http://gshi.org/vb/showthread.php?t=3641&page=3
The competition will close on Monday, July 27th, at 11:59PM Central Time, at which time points will be tallied, and a winner announced.
Happy hacking!
Note: The Artwork Contest is still ongoing, and will not close until July 25th at 11:59PM Central Time. If you'd like a shot at claiming the prize and having your artwork on next year's GSHI t-shirts, you only have a few days left to submit your masterpiece. Check out the above thread for more details.

The 1st place winner of the Gaming Tournament, by dominating in two of the three games, is CzarDragon.
The 2nd place winner, by leading score in the remaining game, is Ace.
And the second-highest raw score was Pugsy. Ace chose to defer his prizes to Pugsy, in lieu of his scores.
The Artwork Contest is still ongoing, and will be open until 11:59PM Central Time, July 25th, so create something, and submit it! The Hacking Competition will open on July 20th. Get ready!

For those of you who don't keep up with the Project Artemis BountySource page:
Thanks to Viper187 (who quite impressively did much of the work completely blind, without a working PS2 with networking capabilities), we now have dump comparison (code search) functionality, and can search for codes for games that are compatible with Core_Launcher (see the Compatibility List). Work is being done (by Jimmikaelkael) to allow forcing of values (code testing during hacking), which will be a huge improvement as well.

I've started a thread entitled, "What hacking guides are still required?" in the VG School of Hacking forum.
If there's something you'd like a guide written on, whether it be for your own sake or that of new hackers, drop by and let me know. If I'm knowledgeable in the area of your request, I'll write something up, and if not, I'll find someone who is:

I needed it

I've again updated the Artemis BountySource Downloads page, including the latest rev of Viper187's PS2CC, and a USB hacking system package that includes PS2CC and jimmikaelkael's IGMassdumper (the package allows you to dump to a USB flash drive repeatedly, then take the flash drive to your PC and compare the different dumps just as you would during live searching).

Updated the Project Artemis (PS2 hacking system) BountySource page (Community, Project Artemis) to reflect current events. However, much work remains to be done.
I'll be updating the pre-built PS2SDK today or tomorrow (I hope), and getting back to work on some other projects.

The default forum theme (style) has been changed to one made by JNABK (entitled gshi-design).
