Yesterday, I stumbled upon an article on cheating and hacking in video games, by Feross Aboukhadijeh, a computer science student at Stanford University. It was a fairly short piece of work, and didn't go into much detail, but I liked its portrayal of hacking as being positive unless it adversely affects the experience of other players (online hacking, etc).

I sent him an email to thank him for the article, which apparently reminded him that he'd forgotten to publish the finished version. It's now up on his blog, and it's a good read:

    Cheating in Video Games!

On a side note, his blog in general is cool, and the guy's a genius. He created Instant.fm, and co-created YouTube Instant, which won him fame, an article in just about every technical and computing magazine, site, and blog out there, and a job offer from the founder of YouTube. Drop by his blog and pay homage: HERE

GSHI.org is changing its name to GameHacking.org!

Staff is remaining the same, and there's no change in management or ownership. We're merely changing the name of the site, and increasing the intensity of our efforts to bring together the hacking scene, and bring you everything you need to tear games apart

PS2Dev.org has been down for some time now (and intermittently down before that), and though GSHI was slated to take over the official SVN repo, PS2Dev.org staff failed to coordinate and perform the required migration.

Due to recent events in the hacking scene, I will be stepping back into GSHI as Executive Administrator. LiquidManZero will remain in the same position as well.

Kodewerx is on the brink of vanishing. With the tragic loss of ugetab, my recent departure, and various other events, GSHI has become nearly dormant. CMP grows quiet. Even the relatively new WiiRD community isn't anywhere near as active as it should be. The smaller, more personal sites such as Hacking101 and CheatersLounge are suffering the same fate. What's more, we're fragmented; there's no real continuity between sites, and only some members visit more than one regularly.

Something must be done to bring the scene together, or we will crumble and fall. Any hacking site that fails must be preserved, either by re-hosting, new administration, archiving, or some combination of these. And a bridge must be built between the remaining sites, to foster a new era of hacking and collaboration. Hopefully I can do my part to facilitate these.

Any help is appreciated, and ideas are welcome. Feel free to send me a PM on the forums. I'll be speaking with the owners of the other sites personally, so if your thoughts have merit, they will be voiced to them as well.

Well, it's certainly been a while since anything major has happened. I've been taking a break from the scene, Artemis development has halted, and there hasn't been much hacking going on.

Granted, this is the holiday season, so perhaps everyone's been busy with real life, but I'm beginning to accept that with Artemis once again dormant, WiiRD is the only shining glimmer of hope for the future of hacking.

I've been playing a lot of PS3 games lately, and it pains me to lack the ability to hack something, the way it pained me for the PS2 (and still does, for those games Artemis can't tear asunder). I hope Datel has devs/hackers/engineers working long hours in dark rooms with logic analyzers, disassemblers, and hundreds of milligrams of caffeine to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

Until then, I suppose there are still thousands of great, unhacked codes to be born on a myriad of retro and pseudo-current-gen systems (and the Wii), hacking guides to be written, and general tomfoolery to be set in motion for our cheap entertainment. And we can always toss together mental lists of things to-be-hacked-when-possible for our beloved, unhackable systems. At least a good amount of the games themselves are decent, which I haven't been able to say since the dawn of the PSX.

Come to think of it, I guess things aren't so bad for the time being. Thanks for cheering me up, guys. I needed it

We've also added a few alternate themes, including my personal favorite, Morbid Blueberry (which, thanks to JNABK, now has a minimal GSHI.org logo as well), and another light GSHI theme by JNABK. He has chosen to pass his prizes down to Pugsy (who also received a perfect 30/30, but submitted later than ugetab), who himself elected to pass his codes to Whipon (who received an almost perfect 28/30).

Congrats to all those who excelled in this year's anniversary contest, and keep an eye open for next year's events, which will be even more challenging (and likely yield even better prizes).

Several new revs of PS2CC have been released by Viper187, and PS2 hacking is now even more streamlined

Also, Jimmikaelkael's IGMassDumper works like a charm. IGMD allows you to dump EE memory to a USB flash drive. Couple that with the fact that GTLCPimp has apparently made considerable progress with in-game display of graphics (though it's still currently buggy), and bungholio's ASM memory scanner/comparison tool, and we're getting closer to having a PS2-side hacking system as well

    From the Artemis BountySource page:

Jimmikaelkael has added remote value patching to Core_LauncherV2, and Viper187 has thus implemented it in PS2CC. In other words: for games that Artemis is compatible with (about 50% of games, currently), we can now search for codes, and test the results until we find the codes we’re looking for

Note: The Artwork Contest is still ongoing, and will not close until July 25th at 11:59PM Central Time. The 1st place winner of the Gaming Tournament, by dominating in two of the three games, is CzarDragon.

The 2nd place winner, by leading score in the remaining game, is Ace.

And the second-highest raw score was Pugsy. Ace chose to defer his prizes to Pugsy, in lieu of his scores.

The Artwork Contest is still ongoing, and will be open until 11:59PM Central Time, July 25th, so create something, and submit it! The Hacking Competition will open on July 20th. Get ready!

For those of you who don't keep up with the Project Artemis BountySource page:

Thanks to Viper187 (who quite impressively did much of the work completely blind, without a working PS2 with networking capabilities), we now have dump comparison (code search) functionality, and can search for codes for games that are compatible with Core_Launcher (see the Compatibility List). Work is being done (by Jimmikaelkael) to allow forcing of values (code testing during hacking), which will be a huge improvement as well.

Project Artemis, a PS2 hacking system in development, has been moved out of the darkness, and into the realm of open source. Check it out at http://gshi.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=56

Incidentally, "Majestic Porter", the code handling/converting/offset utility that's still in progress, is merely an anagram of "Project Artemis"

I just thought I'd take a minute to thank Hybrid. He does an amazing job of keeping the code database updated, as well as hacking his own codes. He's also a cool, amicable guy in general. He doesn't get as much recognition as he should, so pay him some respect when you pass him by.

While it has been tested rather extensively, there's always a possibility of errors creeping in, so if you find something wrong, tell us about it.

Updated the version of ARCrypt (2.4b) available in the downloads section to a more up to date (or current) 3.12 alpha.

New features include support for encryption/decryption of CBA, and ARv4 codes. (The old version can still be found here.)

Also, GBACCC v1.2 (GBA Cheat Code Converter) has been added to the downloads section.

This program will format your GBA codes in to whatever format you specify. Very handy for those who do not understand code types too well, or are just too lazy.

      [Edit]

Apparently GBACCC can not use some code types.. Keeping it up though as it is still useful.

Also, though it's likely no longer needed, I've added GSACrypt to the downloads section.

The Nintendo DS codes that were submitted by NDShxer666/lemmayoshi were hacked by Metal Overlord. These were, it seems, stolen by OLungfish and posted at our forums. This was already resolved, but now it seems lemma is trying to stir things up again. Do not add any codes submitted by lemma/NDS. I've removed those that were already added.

Please note, also, that Dlong and lemmayoshi are not admins at GSC; Dlong is a moderator, and lemmayoshi is a member.

Heh, some kids from GSC attempted a 'leet spam attack' on the GSHI forums and chat. What's even more hilarious is that the "attack" involved at least two of their administrators. I made a thread concerning it, under Announcements, at the forums. I really hope this somehow, humorously, comes back to them in a bad way.

I love being able to customize a site. I like the seperating fo the official codes from the user made codes. It was always a pet peeve of mine that other sites like to mingle them together. The thing about that is that sometimes you want to check on what is original and stuff and it gets hidden in the plethora of officially made codes.

Well, being a woman I know that and agree you are right Hiro, the mere fact that rune is that damn stupid shows his brain prblems as is well documented otherwise. I even admit I do that, I smile at people I find completly nasty, I smile to be polite all the time wishing and waiting for when I can leave and get some freash air, because they smell like urine and are missing teeth and other crap like that, all the time smiling sitting there in my head always thinking "Dear GOD, I hope they do not try to hit on me...or it may get ugly." hehe

        Sun, 26 Feb 2006 10:55:37 -0500
Alot of guys seem to think that a woman smiling at you means they want in your pants. That of course isn't true. I remember seeing something on the learning channel where they showed a pic of a guy talking to a girl who was smiling and most the women took it as her being polite. But about 60 percent of the guys asked thought that meant that she was interested in dating him.

        The Stupidity Of 'rune' Continues
        Sun, 26 Feb 2006 02:46:13 -0500
I spyed with my little eye this 'topic' by rune over at well 'that place'

"I was in the gym today and a hot brunette kept working out right beside me. By the end of my workout, I approached her and gave her a tip about the machine she was on. She turned at me and smiled."

What does this mean, simply, it emans what a complete stupid ass this guy is, the woman was smiling because she was laughing at him, after all we all know 'rune' he is not no hard body of any type, she was without a doubt smiling and laughing at the sight of his body in a gym, it just does not fit. What I find funny myself is still 'rune' ina gym... ahhh hehe let's tell some more bull shit about our made up life rune. Please we want to see how much BS you truely can say.

Well, just differant opinions, I guess, but still, I do think and stand by that gamefaqs is well pretty crapy 'today', I mean it used to be good, but now, nothing any good, all the lies on the forums, the codes as LMZ said, and well the guids we all disagree on. There is nothing, NOTHING over there 'new' nor in anyway 'spectacular' in anyway. There is a reason BradyGames and Prima and Versus Books even ahve game guilds, because they KNOW what they are talking about. After all, heck they are PAID for a job, not some no life loser sitting at home failed out of college living under mom and dad's roof wasting life away and has just all the time in the world to type up BS guild after BS guild about mess and crap about games EVERYONE already knows.

I mean for Final Fantasy 6... geez someone must be totaly new to games to NOT know Shadow has dreams, who needs a guild on that? The Wild ARMS guilds all 'messed' up, heck the Wild ARMS (original for PSX) is now listed under the Wild ARMS Alter Code F game---what stupid ass the admisn truely are indeed. So again, just my opinion, but I still say the place is pure crap more or less, soryr just my views on it. Again yes may be good to 'some' people, those two or three who first picked up a PS2 as their FIRST system or such, but the rest of the world in video games anyway, heck we know better, alot better, or should know better anyway to even need gamefaqs even 'around' on the net. PLUS they are 'in' with pelican, that alone is reason enough to make fun of them anyway.

Now otherwise as fot the suicide thing, IF someone here is stupid enough to do that, heck, let me know fast, that is something to get a bag of popcorn and set back and watch and enjoy really. May sound evil, but not really, this is just human nature, heck this is why stupid shows like 'survivor' is a hit, we 'human' creatures want to watch some type of REAL tragedy always happening to someone else, again not evil, just is how we all are. Police chases, the 'news' as a matter of fact, that survivor crap, anything, we may 'claim' we feel and care, but deep down really we watch a police chase and say to ourselfs always "I wanna watch this idiot flip a few times and burst into flames." So same thing with suicide as well... so heck if anyone here is that stupid 'really' now, hey sign me up, I want to watch that fun unfold.

Yeah, I think GameFAQs has pretty decent guides, and at least it's a decent hub for information. From what I can see, they weren't the cause of that suicide...the same thing could easily happen here.

The faqs and walkthroughs at gamefaqs tend to be pretty good. But the codes have gone completely to hell after they sold out to cnet... But who goes to gamefaqs for codes, anyway?

I'd rather have gamefaqs.com be available, as having it gone would mean a considerable loss of resources. Don't ignore how much effort goes into this site with a few lines of codes per entry, and gamefaqs probably has hundreds of megabytes of faq material to be verified in their submissions.

Well, ever sense the 'place' started alot of people, near 90% have always called 'gamefaqs.com' by the name of gameFAGS simply, well because it is, now the blame, first of all they drive a member to kill themselfs (Yes true story) and well they should be blamed for that and all the other BS they fill the net with. "Have we been fooled?" They ask, and well YES those idiots get fooled 90% of the time, Gamefaqs, the place for your gamming needs IF you wish to kill yourself, or otherwise want to see some pure BS as far as game 'facts' go.

In case your all wondering I've decided to retrive codes from dead sites, to keep them from being lost forever. The code I just posted came from Game Genie code creators club. ummmm 'strange' (and I shall tell and refer you to why 'strange' in a small bit) first of all, Hiro, yes I am aware of that, I am not a total idiot, like say 'rune' or jay007' or such. No not knocking you, just saying I am not all techy, but again I am not all that completely lost in PC computer mess, after all, LMZ and others, yes but mostly him, has indeed shown me alot of neat know-how's for PC fun and such. Now for the big news.... err well again 'not sure why' again, I tell you all and swear to it even, 'nothing' has changed on my PC at all, but just 'now' I am able to get in.... Ummm Now with that, let's just hope it indeed lasts, as again, nothing has changed at all, not been to anything new site wise or anything from yesterday when it all would not work, so strange indeed. Also just for the record, on the whole board thing 'if' that happens, I am with what LMZ said also, NO to new boards unless indeed all member's and all else can indeed be imported over. But again, ironic and strange it all seems to be 'working' right now, so seems no need for even thought into that----still goodness, strange mess.
        - Amy

        Sun, 11 Dec 2005 01:44:23 -0500
I don't know what's going on... There's one thing though. If the board does get itself replaced, it'll only be under the condition that everything can be imported.

If you want your password reset to something specific, that can be done...

I'm guessing Test user was you. Which means you made it back via another account. Oya, when it resets your account and gives your a scrambled password, that is your new password. You gotta use that to log in. Once you do that then you can change your password in your profile.

        Sat, 10 Dec 2005 14:06:45 -0500
Hmm...I just created a test account, and posted with it...so it seems the problem is on your computer, Amy...perhaps your security settings don't like the new location of the board?
        - Lazy Bastard

        Sat, 10 Dec 2005 13:31:05 -0500
hmmm well, yes you are right, and just tried that, but sadly, still same mess, I cannot get in even after a whole new account with new e-mail and all else. (I am the 'new' BloodRayne' you see now on forums newest member, but still same mess as with my real name and account.) So I guess that shows that sadly.... maybe that is why that other new member has not also posted? Am not sure, but sadly and I know it is indeed work on you all, LMZ, Lazy, Hiro, and Ugetab and others, but seems some type of big issue there now as Hiro just asked and I tried, with again a whole new account and I still cannot get in at all same thing as with my Amy account again.
        - Amy

        Sat, 10 Dec 2005 13:13:10 -0500
Well, it would help us see what the problem is coming from. If you can come in thru other accounts then they can fix your account. But if you can't get in thru other accounts then that means the problem doesn't lie in your account. Then that would mean its a problem with the board or your computer.
        - iamstillhiro1112

        Sat, 10 Dec 2005 13:07:21 -0500
Well, that is an idea, but not really my cup of tea really, no offsnce in anyway, just not my type of thing really. I mean just the way I am, 'yes' I do not want to lose my post count, I tend to believe post cound means something (well it does to me anyway and I do tend to 'type alot' so my post count really means alot to me in any case really.) And to create a 'new' alternate me would really just take away from my true self as far as post count and thus each one meaning something, again, I know 'strange' that is just how I am. Plus also, never sure otherwise what more else could be buggy or wrong, I could do that and register a new account and that may 'mess' up my original acocunt or something bad, destroy the world or so----you never know. (My cookies not changing and still having my name under my well known to me pass word, and all cookies here on site set, and my ISP, just somehting not sure I should otherwise exactly 'test out' as is, I do always look at the glass as being half full in most cases in life, but also at times am careful, as is, the famous saying, if it can go wrong, it somewhere 'will' go wrong, so best thing for myself being how I am and who I am is really not to 'mess' with it too much til it all gets fixxed.... I may break soemthing or as said, may put into action something that may destroy the world or such.... so not somehting I wish to do or be the cause of.

        Sat, 10 Dec 2005 09:53:48 -0500
Well, here is what I get and what happens when I try to log in, #1 I 'know' my password I always use here, but I 'did' try' the send me password, just to make sure, and that 'changed' my password to a random one, so is getting a mess, have done thise several times and each time I get this type of mess. It 'says' my account 'is' activated clicking the link in e-mail, yet when I try to log in the forums, I get the following: You have specified an incorrect or inactive username, or an invalid password. Click 'here' to try again, click 'here' to return to index. That is what I get on the forums.... so again I 'know' my password very well, it is well not going to say ofcorse but something that well, is easy for me to know and remember, and my name, ofcorse, 'Amy' is not or cannot be inactive or erased, I can see my posts on the forums yet ofcorse as is, I am a guest all the time now. Also.... I know it is being worked on, and I do thank you all for being bothered with this, I just do not understand it, I see a new member on the forums, and it seems no one else (or are they?) having issues getting in the forums. Also, it is also 'kind of' leaking to the main site log in as well, due to the fact I had a random new pass word sent to my e-mail to see if that would jogg the place into letting me in, I am 'now' even having a few issues logging into the main site also just to make this comment. (Took me 4 times and four different random sent pass words to get one that allowed me in even here.) All in all, again so soryr for this, just getting rather 'scary' in fact and becomming stressful a small bit, well Okay alot. Also and otherwise, 'sorry' for the long comment here also, it should not be so long, blahhh but had to explain all of what I did and tried and explain all of what I get error message wise when I try to log in and such, even now with more then a few new random pass words sent along to me. ummm without a doubt 'once' this all is fixxed, these comments will be better yet erased. (But will explain 'that' also well when able I am able to get in that is.)

Hmm...if we got a new systen, we'd probably find a way to import users and such, so as to avoid having everyone re-register...but yeah, I doubt a new board is in order...I haven't noticed any probs, though I could've missed some...Amy, what exactly is happening when you try to log in? Well, this is not good... I mean you working on it and making changes and trying to fix is all good, but I am still not able to log in, so 'maybe' a new type of board is needed, a real shame because this one was doing so well and we moved to this one type awhile back because that 'other' type was giving all the problems and issues. Plus extra sad point for me, maybe not for all is the post count numbers, after 1000 plus of posts that meant something to me, starting over and looking like a newbie at a site I am part of the staff is sad even to all of the guests and visiotrs (something I would think anyway) So that is and would be a torn in the side as well.... ~_~ Still well got alot to say whenever I can get in, but nothing near the 1000 plus post and reply numbers....

(Also should be made sticky maybe?) After all, seems like a long 'fun'' war when we have the truth on our side always and rune has the misgivings of spurting off 'lies' at every turn.

The small bug with continually adding to the # of hackers has been fixed. Turned out to be a single character typo...

Well, on all that really 'again' and some of it 'new' first off the new stuff, Happy B-Day Lazy (But hey we can say and wish happy B-Days and wishes, after all we are not 'corporate'----yet)

Now as for the whole ipod mess over at GSCCC, well I said it to start with, it just is corny really, and pretty much, heck, I would call it spam even.

It is like hey people send all your friends chain letter e-mails and get a free ipod, but again as I said, the ethics of it, heck, I hate spam, and would not spam anyone for no reason, specialy a piece of 'shit' ipod otherwise.

Plus these are all 'admins' on a corporate site, why 'win' something when they can and should take that Pelican paycheck to buy one flat out if they so wish one so badly.

Sadly but I must admit, this is one time I more respect 'Datel' and it's site after all, their admins do not spam for getting freebie ipods, if they wish one, they go buy it themselfs, with that fat paycheck they get for working and thus being an admin at a 'corporate' site.

Well this is 'stupid'and 'lame', I just checked over at Pelican's GSCCC for 'NEW' codes (Something I do NOT do much sense any updates to PS2 codes to them is and ahs been something unheard of for months now---stupid fuckers) And I see a notice of someone, 'tab' advertising a personal wish for a 'friend' starlet. POINT-As to why it is lame: Simple, that site remains THERE for only one reason 'Pelican' It is NOT a personal site anylonger it is a site for selling Pelican products and code for their products that is all. Therefore as said by another

"Um... yeah, I don't know exactly why an admin is blatantly advertising for something that's tecnically considered "personal" on the main page."

Also that person got it right, no ethics on the part of tab nor her 'friend'. A Paid for site USED to sale Pelican products, nothing more, people in the world is really lame and stupid, examples of two right there.

That is well simple maybe we should have done it from start but otherwise is rather neat, I mean the recent updates by LiquidManZero adding Chemist's codes in. Sorry for being a tad upset, but well I am about that GSCCC.com 'mess'. Otherwise, hell, to beat an asshole, you have to become an asshole in most cases, so the hell with it all, I'd say we do the same mess, have OUR codes all locked away unless you register and log in, then heck, we get two birds with one stone in most cases. We get to be 'assholes' as well just like GSCCC and heck, we can also cut down on the stealing of codes, so maybe an idea, that fight fire with fire sorta thing, or rather fight an asshole, with being an asshole as well.

I could probably figure it out, but dealing with programming on windows ain't worth the hassle...

If it works on the SNES stuff, then there's no reason it should have problems with the PSX section.
          - LiquidManZero

          Thu, 09 Jun 2005 03:52:06 -0400
If you know about programming or whatever I got the source to the program also.

Ugetab says the program is tab delimited, whatever that means. Uh, he said this also.

ugetab : Look at the window when you convert
ugetab : It handles all the codes you enter
ugetab : it just removes 10 and loads the next 10 into the form

Anyway, I haven't yet tried it on the PSX section but I will be cause I'm gonna add some of his FF9 codes on there so it'll be it's first PSX run by me.
          - iamstillhiro1112

          Thu, 09 Jun 2005 03:05:43 -0400
Hmm... The idea of an actual program to do that sort of thing might be a good one... Too bad I have no way of doing anything about it. Though, maybe something could be set up so a program would just send stuff directly to the php script, instead of filling in forms.

Either way, that might be quite a useful program.

There could be an automatically added position, set to something or other, but at best it'd be one more query per code. Which may not be a problem, depending on how slow you think it is now.
          - LiquidManZero

          Wed, 08 Jun 2005 20:41:13 -0400
Yeah, Ugetab has contributed alot to the SNES section so far. I almost thought I might never get them all up. But he was nice enough to make a tool to help me get them up much faster, I'll let you guys look at it. He said that it may help with the PSX section also.

          http://www.geocities.com/iamstillhir...Filler_112.zip

Pretty much you just have to copy the codes and past them in the top left window, click convert and they will be ready to send to the code submitting page. Then just click the Send info button and click in the top empty form fillout thing. And it types all the info on the page.

Oya, I also have another suggestion, seeing as the sorting can't be easily fixed, why not fix it so that each code is automatically given a sorting number instead of all them having zero? Then there would be no more sorting issues I think.

Well, I'm back finally, it turns out that my cpu problems had nothing to do with that windows update. One of the cooling fans gave out. Luckily the cpu is still under warranty and I didn't have to pay to have it replaced. Unfortunately the cpu was reformatted so i lost everything on the computer and have to start downloading things all over again.

It's definitely good. Sooner or later, I'll be done adding PSX codes from the Archives, and I'll be able to hack a bit more, and probably do some other things. That, and in a month or so, I should be able to commence serious research and development with Brand and EMS, and finally get a few things accomplished, in...some area...which I suppose I'll now shed light on, in your direction. Drop by the forums and look around. *wink*

Yeah, I figure later we'll have to fix the grammar of codes - capitalization of hex digits, capitalization/spelling/grammar of code descriptions and notes, etc...so we'll fix everything at once, whenever...or as we go along, whichever.

Well, next time that happens I'll let you know. But I think it's been happening alot. Cause when I page thru the PS section I see alot of things double spaced that don't look like they were intended to be. So later on we'll have to fix those double spaces so the page won't be bigger than it needs to be.

Those extra spaces get there because it replaces those line breaks with spaces...Or something...Can you post (and not here, as it'd screw up the formatting) the exact input that's giving the weird spacing?

          Thu, 19 May 2005 05:05:22 -0400
I c. I think that is the problem. Although those spaces don't show up when I first post them, they are there when I go to edit them. I guess the only way to get around that is to post codes 1 line at a time.

          Thu, 19 May 2005 04:33:54 -0400
Hmm...if you're not pasting any tags, make sure you don't highlight a non-existent space after the text you want...you'll know if your cursor ends up blinking a line below the text you pasted, or if you can click far to the right of some text above the bottom pasted line, and the blinking cursor ends up one space right of the text, even though there should be no space there...that'll add an extra break below...

Now FAQ text can be directly added to the database, or you can link an FAQ instead if you want to.

That weirdness with the spacing should only be happening if you're using <br> tags in there... And it looks very much like that's what happened.

If you find a code like that, go to edit, and just save the code. The extra line breaks will be removed automatically.

          Thu, 19 May 2005 01:49:51 -0400

Yeah, I read whate you were saying. The chat was going by kind of fast so maybe you didn't see my responce. I think I agree with the adding zeroes to codes so long as we have some kind of text somewhere where they will notice it explaining how to get it to work with emultors. Its easy, just remove some zeroes. I also like the idea of making it easier to add our own faq's. Maybe it could be done with the staff and download section as well. That way we can keep the staff uptodate and also I could upload a couple emulators. The gens special edition one and FCEUXD. Plus a couple of those programs on there are outdated, like lunar magic. That way I could help keep that section up to date as well.

Incidentally, any chance you could mod the PHP system a bit to allow us to add FAQs as we do reviews? I understand the purpose of the url input system, but could there ALSO be a direct PHP input system, with, perhaps, the option to simply input a URL?

I don't know about the search idea. It'd be nice, but I'm not sure I can do it. Part of the problem is my general lack of knowlegde as to how decent search engines work, and the other is that the information is mostly being stored in a ton of separate database tables...

Liquid - A search function. If possible, allow "any of these keywords", "all of these keywords", and "exact phrase" functions, at least.

hiro - We really should get a few notes up on the main system pages explaining what emulators to use, and how to convert codes. Nonetheless, did you read what I mentioned? FCEUXD isn't even searching the entire memory; NNNesterJ is a superior emulator, with a superior hacking system that searches the entire memory. Having two kinds of code pages isn't necessary - though you're right; we do need to add those notes...

Well, I'll let you know of there's any features or fixes I can think of.

Are you sure that works Lazy? just adding 2 zeros to turn fceu codes for PARs? I haven't heard of that working so we should be sure about that. Perhaps we could just leave the ( ) things off of FCEUXD codes and just put them around PAR codes, and then take the zeroes off the fceuxd. Otherwise I'm pretty sure people will get lost at the code page and not know how to enter the code in their emulator.

Ya, I never thought that about my sig. lol. I think I will have to change that.

Edit: Wow, it looks like it does work. I just took away the zeros from those codes King edgar made for SMB3 and they worked on the fceultra. I still think that to make the site more user freindly to those who come here for codes we should take the 2 zeroes off the front of the code. Perhaps somewhere we can put a note on how to convert these codes to PAR format tho. Like at the top or bottom of the NES page. You are right tho, taking (FCEUXD) and (PAR) off the end of the games names looks alot better.

I hate to say it, but the rewrite is going to take awhile... But, it'll probably be worth it. If nothing else, it'll prevent possible trouble in certain cases that could happen the way it is now...

Now would be a good time to request features for the codes section...

            Wed, 18 May 2005 05:31:10 -0400
OK, I'm finished. From now on, just add NES codes in the new format (except for Game Genie codes), and either hack them with FCEUXD and add 00 to the beginning, or try NNNesterJ (which would allow you to search the entire memory, afterall) and add just one 0.

hiro - Over at GSCentral, part of your sig says

The GSHI (Sage hackers and Codes not found here)
            http://thegshi.org/

Heh, this makes it sound like there are no sage hackers and codes here...

            Wed, 18 May 2005 04:49:42 -0400
hiro - Actually, I just needed to convert the "PAR"-style codes to the more common 4-digit-address format, which is generally a matter of removing the two 00's in the beginning (I've run a few tests). I'm modding the titling, leaving PAR until I finish (I'll have to go find out about the ones that start with 01, heh). We'll just support 4-digit addresses (two-digit value), and convert anything anyone submits that's six (until we manage to add a note about format).

[Edit] Well, damn it. After checking it out, it seems everything beyond FFFF is in Extended Memory, something only covered by the top NES emus, to include NNNesterJ...so I'll just add 00 to everything, unless it already has it (or has 01), to make 8-digit codes (6-digit addresses with 2-digit values). Grab NNNesterJ, hiro; it's great. Just drop by Zophar.net's NES section...

Liquid - That's damn cool, though. I've wanted sub-subsections at least twice now.

            Wed, 18 May 2005 04:30:12 -0400
While that would make it look better that means we would have to throw out someones hard work. And afterall, this site was created to give homes to codes that couldn't find a home before. If you want you can create subsections and move codes into those sections as gscentral does. Say there can be a game genie section, a par section, and FCEUXD section. But we might want to do that with all the systems then, genesis would need a par and game genie section, snes would need game genie and par section. Altought I really hate to have to redo the snes section cause it took me days to add hackwiz's game genie codes. But if it has to be done I'll do it.

Heh...all righty then...KE it was. Though I thought I hacked the 3rd Slot Item Mod, and that it was the only one hacked...but I do remember KE hacking the item in chest mod, so whatever; my mistake, I'm sure.

In any case, we should make all NES codes the same format (what's now called FCEUXD), and remove the parenthesized label from their game titles...then slap an explanation on the main page per system, with what format codes are in/can be submitted in, and an example or two of what emulators use those formats (plural, as in one per system, heh). But geh, I should just have already done that instead of explaining it all in detail here...and I would, if it weren't for this prob with entering passive mode on the ftp...anyone else having it?

I think it means the age old prophecy has been fulfilled, and KE has just finished the [FAQ NAME NOT SHOWN]...heh.

Odd seeing as MK isn't very popular over there. But I guess US didn't want it either cause at that time it was old and forgotten. Anyway I added the games region to the games description.

Right now it takes me to a blank page. I can get to it thru the "codes" link, but not the gameboy link on the main page. Oya, I was also thinking maybe we could have 2 psx links. All right. Bleh, in my half-awake, brutally zombified state, I spilled a quarter or so of a cup of water across my laptop keyboard last night, and now I've got a dead box. It's possible it'll dry in the next few, but I wouldn't count on it...I'll be buying a new laptop sometime this week, hopefully (unless it works, heh). We'll see.

Ya, maybe we should just do it that way, cause I still got a load of retro codes to add anyway.

            Tue, 10 May 2005 05:22:58 -0400
Perhaps, but since we update at the same time a lot, it'd probably be easier to just finish it myself (so as to avoid overlap and double-post), unless you'd like to take a particular piece or something.

            Tue, 10 May 2005 02:22:48 -0400
It might help to delete hackers in the old PSsection as you add their codes to the new PS section. That way we can see how much needs to be added. I might help add them too if I could figure out what needs to be added.

That's cool; the quality is what's important. Take your time, definitely. On a side note, I'm going to leave the addition of your PSX codes to you, for several reasons:

1: I don't know how you'd like to arrange them.
2: Apparently, you may be working at a way to more quickly add them.
And 3: There're so damn many of them, heh.

So I'll skip over those for the time being...

Heh, I can't believe I didn't make the correlation...thanks. Yeah, there was never a problem with the banner rotation before, but it does seem to be acting strangely...though one of us could have accidentally modded it while updating manually. I'll check it out later.

            Thu, 05 May 2005 11:07:53 -0400
I know that if you have a ' in the title then you cannot enter codes for it. So if you used Chocobos Racing instead of Chocobo's Racing it will work. That RPG host thing is giving me problems tho. If you know what I mean. I think it means you need to find a different advertisement on top of the screen.

            Thu, 05 May 2005 05:18:48 -0400
Bleh...ran into a brick wall trying to add some PSX codes...updating the PHP system, Liquid? It seems to only give me a problem when I attempt to add codes for Chocobo's Dungeon 2...which, for some reason (even after I deleted and re-added it manually), thinks it was added in 1969...
EDIT - OK...so adding Chocobo's Racing has gives the same Failed, weird date effect. Geh?

            Tue, 03 May 2005 15:43:17 -0400
Oya, I went thru the SNES section and sorted things out a little bit. Since most game codes are PAR codes I left them as they were. But games that had game genie codes I created a seperate page for them and added (Game Genie) at the end of the name. I also removed the spaces that were in PAR codes cause that is the standard format they use in Emulators. I would suggest we do this with future codes to keep the pages consistant one to another.

            Tue, 03 May 2005 13:09:40 -0400
Ok, I hope it don't slow down the updating too much cause I still have a good number of codes to add.

            Tue, 03 May 2005 12:57:28 -0400
Actually, it will slow down the updating, but only in the actual processing stage... But, the delay will be worth it, as it'll take about 2/3rds of the load off of just viewing codes...

            Tue, 03 May 2005 12:34:44 -0400
Hmmm. I didn't notice this section. I thought it was same as update. Thanks for the comment Lazy. I made some SNES codes also that I will add later. So maybe by the time I add those the SNES will take the lead again.

BTW, I'm looking forward to the new code submit sytem. Anything to speed up the updating of the site will be great.

Edit: I thought I'd let you know I added a code for Lunar 2 (PSX) that Creed made for me some time back. It never got put up on cmgsccc so I thought I'd put it here.
