  • Utilities to translate Sega saturn games

Hi im a new guy in here. I have my first question. I want to translate Lunar Magic School for sega saturn, from japanese to english. I know that is fairly possible, in fact some russian user up on you tube posted a short clip of such game translated into english, atleast the menus screens. I dont know japanese but i do have some utilities to translate it into english tho. So there are any tools for the sega saturn that allow you to modify all the texts? And if there are could somebody point those out for me please? Much appriciated cheers. I have a ISO of the game and i dumped the content in a new folder...

Well, translating games is not a simple thing, or everyone would just do it. Typically data is stored differently from one game to the next, no matter how similar they are (sequels and so on), so there aren't any general purpose tools that will do the work for you. There are some text management or ripper tools that you can use to pull the script down, convert it, and in some cases reinsert it after modifying. However, you have to be able to provide the text encoding, and in most cases, tell the tool where to even look for text.

If you get lucky, the game will use a known text-encoding, like Shift-JIS. If you get really lucky, the game will use the BIOS font rather than some subset, and can be modified easily to read a different font from a different region's BIOS (and you only need characters it provides). It's more likely that the game uses its own encoding, and its own font. Chances are that it won't provide an entire Latin alphabet. Your first task will be to figure out which of these is the case for your game, so you can both plan for forcing it to display the characters you need, and start pulling out the text for translation.

If none of that makes any sense, you might find your chosen goal too daunting. Especially since you're not familiar with Japanese.

Go to romhacking.net and ask there. They will be able to offer a lot more help with that.

This site is more about hacking codes, not about actually hacking graphics or text routines and things like that.
