A cheat menu?

Hope this was ok to post here. I was looking at the rom of The Legend of Hero Tonma for the Turbo Grafx-16 in a hex editor. It looks like there may be some kind of cheat mode in the game. I have no idea how to find it, maybe someone could!

At 0xbab4 it says:

I've never hacked this system before, but some tips that might help. There is probably a button cheat to be inputted at the title screen. You can try holding different buttons on boot-up to see what happens, or search for the button cheat like so:

1) At the main menu (try different screens due to sneaky devs), do a "Equal To" search for zero, or a "Not Equal To (!=)" zero search.

2) Press a button and do a "Not Equal To," or "Different To" search (depending on your choice in step 1). Examine the results carefully. Look for any address whose value increments by X amount, or reverts back to zero, when the wrong button is pressed (a good sign). Note the buttons accepted as it increments.

3) Repeat the first two steps, for the first button press that gives you the fewest results.

I've done this a few times for some games, where the button cheats were not stored in RAM. It's a tedious process, but one of my last resort tricks. Anyone that hacks this system here, should be able to help you.

I do have MESS on my laptop, I don't know how to cheat with MESS for the T-16/PC Engine though. Is it possible to find ROM addresses with it? My goal one day is to patch all of my favorite T-16 games with codes.

I had a T-16 back in the day and always liked it even though some of the games brought to the US console were not the greatest choices lol. Now I play the games on my original Xbox with Mednafenx.

Apparently the debug "code" most likely is entered during a paused game. I'd assume the top section of the screen scrolls right to show you the debug/play mode selection. The code above just scrolls the upper display over, but unfortunately does not allow you to modify anything as it is just visual. I was not able to find what controls the debug mode, nor find any sort of code being checked for input in memory. It is possible the mode was disabled, and since the graphics were off the screen anyways they just didn't remove them.

As far as finding ROM codes in MESS, you can do that on any system, as MESS has a universal debugger for all systems which shows the ROM code as it executes. I may take another look at this game later, but am currently looking into what the song on the first stage reminds me of (old techno/trance song or something with all the beeps mid way through the stage tune)...

I use Turbo Engine for my roms. Not sure if it would help me find codes to hack my roms, but the emu has an H6280 debugger, but is disabled for some reason.

I guess the RAM codes work with other emulators, this is the first time I've emulated the system and the only emulator I have used is Ootake (last updated 11-22-2013). You can download the emulator at: http://ouma.jp/ootake/

All of the codes are entered on the Title Screen. You need to hold the Select button and press the I and II buttons the required amount of times. It does not matter which button you use, as long as you alternate between the two. For example (Expert mode cheat): I, I, II, II is the same cheat as II, II, I, I. If successful, a message in brackets should appear.
