  • Wii Homebrew Takes Several Leaps Forward

Fans of Homebrew on the Nintendo Wii can celebrate with an explosion of releases today, in just a few hours there has been a release of a proof of concept version of Linux for the Wii, an MP3 Player, the Super Nintendo emulator Snes9X has been ported and a converter that converts Gamecube Dol files into Elf for usage on the Wii (Which opens up a multitude of emulators and homebrew games and applications).

A tutorial on how to get homebrew working with the Twilight Hack will help those interested.

I read somewhere that PS3 can be used to crack passwords. At about 100 times the speed of most computers actually.

I like how they are turning our consoles into different machines since they got these hard drives.

Yay for internet access and buffer overflows.

I can just see someone using other people's PS3 machines to remotely crack passwords. I've thought for a while that with case differences, 8 characters would take more time than it's worth to crack for NTLM, MD5, and other hashes. Now, to be sure to achieve the same thing, you need to make sure you use 9 char.s, upper case, lower case, a number and a special character.

Good luck getting 'regular people' to follow those rules.
This reality is mine. Go hallucinate your own.

The first thought that comes to mind, is Nintendo trying to do a firmware update to prevent this from working. Then there's the question as to why it has to be an SD to GC card adapter as opposed to just something that would let you write files to a GC card... Lots of missing information as to how and why things are being done the way they are. Looks like the Xbox "homebrew" scene all over again...

The problem with PS3, is that it's quite expensive. If anything, people will be using various graphics hardware to accelerate processing of such things, rather than going out and getting a game console badly crippled being described as a "computer entertainment" system.

Of course for the more common hashes that people want cracked there's faster ways of doing it than traditional brute force.

The twilight princess hack is evolving fast. Now you can use the front sd card slot to load things instead of just the gc sd card adaptor. I believe it was only the other way 'coz people are so used to loading things like that on the GC, and there wasn't as much documentation for the front sd slot on the wii.
Though since the emulators out for the wii are just ports of emulators on gc at the moment, even though you can load the emulator from the front sd card slot, the gc versions of the emulators still look for the gc slot sd card loader for roms. :P

The newest WIP version of the hack, installs itself into the wii system menu as a copy of the mii channel, so you don't have to load up zelda each time you want to load homebrew!

And as for Nintendo firmware updates to stop this?? They've updated twice since the hack, with both updates released very close to eachother, and neither update has fixed the hole.
I'm sure it's coming though. I hope someone releases a wii version spoofer before that happens though, so we can still play the games we buy without having to update and get rid of our schtuff.

          *UPDATE*
Just got home and checked around the net, it seems Nintendo has made a new firmware update that will disable the twilight princess hack. -_- Now I've gotta make sure nobody tries to go to the wii shop any time soon on my wii.
