  • is it possible to hack game-shark codes into GB Color roms

ok so i picked up a gameboy/gameboy color flash cart heres the link to said cart http://store.kitsch-bent.com/product/usb-64m-smart-card

now so far i have been able to hack/patch game genie codes into my original gameboy roms but since the gameboy color uses a game shark is there a way i can hack/patch gameboy color game shark codes into my GBC roms unlike the everdirves this flashcart doesnt have a built in game shark or game genie but altering the roms works no problems any ideas?

dont wanan shell out monies for a gbc game shark unless i have to

GBC/GBC are basically the same except that the GBC has a double speed mode which is double the clock speed (and some other small things like wave pattern frequencies...). Need not worry about this when converting ROM patches to games, just follow the same methods as you would with a GB ROM and it will work.

if there no game genie codes for that game

you can request game genie codes for that game here
        http://gamehacking.org/vb/forums/11-Retro-Hacking

action replay / gameshark codes is same product for GB/GBC
lee4 Does Not Accept Codes Requests !
When lee4 asks a question it does not mean lee4 will look at your game

you dont understand tho no gameboy color games supported the game genie they only supported the gameshark plus i doubt some one would be willing to make codes for the 50+ GBC roms i have no offense tho

Game Genie and Gameshark does not care about game type GB, SGB or GBC and vice versa

I'm assuming he means maybe game genie and gameshark have entirely different code types and formats that are not compatible with each other??? If that's the case, it'd be a nightmare to explain and I couldn't, I'd only know how to do this on the PS2 or PS3, I don't know a thing about finding unused space or a hook for the codes or even the assembly language gameboy and gameboy color games use so I really couldn't explain. There's always gbatemp's site though, not sure how much they do involving older generation stuff like the gameboy though.

If you take a look around the gbatemp forums, somebody might know where the gameshark inserts in memory into each game and where to place a hook, and if so you could manually add the codes yourself with a little assembly code knowledge.

I know if I ever needed it on the PS2 that for most games the memory from 00080000-00100000 is unused space and I could manually insert code for whatever I want into the games, and I know where to put the hook to link to it, and if I take a glance I can probably guess which few lines in the beginning of the elf file will tell me which to modify to make it start placing game code at 00080000 instead of 00100000. Never tried it but I doubt it would be complicated, it's likely the same for your thing. I just don't play those games or anything so I wouldn't be help to genuinely help even though it's likely the same exact idea for anything from like the PS2 era and earlier.

You can use Game Genie codes with GBC games but you need a black GBC Codebreaker cheat device and convert the codes into simplest form. In rare cases you will need a hook code - this is usually the VBLANK hook that is called once per frame (sometimes more than that), or a bank hook ??:4000 to get the game to work properly with the codebreaker.
