  • Please can you hack this code into a game for me (N64)

    One of my favourite N64 games is Duke Nukem: Zero Hour (to me it's still the best Duke Nukem game ever, even though only about three people seem to have played it ), and even though I've played through it several times, I've still not found all of the in-game secrets, and so I am hoping to get an invincibility cheat so I can explore the levels for as long as I like. I found a code:

    800DF203 0001

    for the European version of the game. I've tried the code on an emulator, using the emulator's built in Gameshark emulation, and it works (the emulator I used is 1969, as I couldn't get Project 64 to work with cheat codes), but I can't use Gameshark codes as I'm using an Everdrive to play the game rom on my N64 (the Everdrive does some Gameshark emulation, but only partially so far), so if possible could someone please apply this code, or a different one that achieves the same thing (infinite health), to a copy of the game rom.

    By the way, if you do try it, and want to test the code, then start DN:ZH, wait for the (unskippable, grrrr...) cutscenes to end, then when you control Duke, turn around, walk out the door that's directly opposite the monitor screen (press B to open the door), then just keep walking forward, through the doors, until you get to the helicopter. Another cutscene, then you start the game in the car park. Shoot your fellow soldiers if you like (so they don't kill the aliens as you want the aliens to attack you to see if your health falls when they shoot you) then walk forward, and there's an explosion, and two aliens attack you. If the cheat code works then you don't lose any health (it works in the emulator 1969).

    The code is from:

    Thanks for any answers.

    You wanted the code for the European release, right?

      That is fantastic! I've just tried it and works brilliantly.

      Thanks so much for that, now I can finally (I hope!) find all of the secrets that have eluded me for so long.

      Thanks again, mate.

        No, problem!
        Glad it worked.
        I have an EverDrive 64 being shipped, and it's what got me interested in patching some games.

        Thank you for stating the region, supplying a RAM code and the code source; lots of new posters forget that stuff.
        And really thanks for the very detailed instructions.

        I'll be putting future patches here if you want to check the page every now and again:

          The Everdrive is fantastic, the only problem is if your TV can't support foreign (to it) displays, so even though my PAL ED64 let's me play NTSC and JAP games, some of those games just give me a black screen on my TV (though the ED64 + those games work fine on the other TV in the house). PAL games are fine on it, of course.

          Fortunately, Goldeneye X (the reason I bought my Everdrive 64 - http://www.goldeneyevault.com/viewfile.php?id=202) works fine, once the boot up screen is over (I just get a black screen on my main TV until Bond starts in Joanna's office (from Perfect Dark).

          There's another hack I'd love (sorry!), for Conker's Bad Fur Day, but I can't supply any code or anything, as I don't know if a code for it exists (or if anyone's even thought of trying it). I've made another post about it, so if you get the time I'd be grateful if you could consider it, but if not, or if it does turn out to be impossible, then fair enough, I'm very happy to have infinite health for Duke Nukem: Zero Hour.

          I'll bookmark your page, thanks. It's always great to find new N64 resources on the 'net - for some reason the N64 doesn't seem to have a big online community, unless I'm just unaware of some good sites. The ones I know of are;

            Everdrive64 v1 with (unofficial) alt64 OS and v2 with official 2.04 OS can use Gameshark v2.0 (not v2.2+) codes
            both versions have Force video output to NTSC or PAL option

              I know, I tried a few codes with both the official 2.x OS and Saturnu's OS, both on my v2 Everdrive, and none of the codes worked, but Chilly Willy, who wrote the cheat engine that's used in bot OSes, says he's going to resume work on it soon, so hopefully one day it will be perfect.

              I can't remember if the DN:ZH code was amongst those I tested, though.

              Yes, but nothing I tried made a difference. Apparently PAL TVs don't really display NTSC, they use PAL60, and implementations vary from manufacturer to manufacturer (and even within the same manufacturer's collection of TVs, different models have different tolerances for NTSC type signals). That's what I've read, I know nothing about the technicalities myself.

                Sorry, I didn't have any luck with Conker's Bad Fur Day. I found a whole lot of addresses controlling the camera movement though. The only thing I was really able to do is disable the ability to go into first person mode. I was using the USA release because I just happened to already have a save state for it. By the way, that seems like an awesome game, can't wait to play it on real hardware. This RAM code is the closest I got to making anything worthwhile: 80182c95 00?? Example value 36. That address seemed to mostly control the camera keeping it behind you. The many other camera addresses are in proximity to that one.

                  Really!?
                  I have no problems using GS codes on EverDrive64.
                  Try make sure using correct codes for correct game version (1.0, 1.1, 1.2) and region.

                    Fair enough, thanks for trying. It's not a real problem with the game, just me being picky as I love the game so much. There are lots of games with bad cameras, but CBFD isn't one of them, thankfully.

                    I'll try that, thanks. It will give me an excuse to try the Gameshark code on the Everdrive 64 again!

                    It is good. The following is copied and pasted from a post I made on another forum;

                    Conker's Bad Fur Day is a great game. In single player, it's a 3D platformer with occasional bits of third person shooting and vehicle combat. The game mechanics aren't perfect, as it's camera isn't always great (sometimes it swings around so you don't see what's in front of Conker, though you can manually correct it), some sections of the game aren't as enjoyable as others, and it does follow a "do this task three times then you can exit to the next area" rule pretty obviously. But on the plus side, it's genuinely funny at times (it's the funniest game I've ever played that isn't a point and click adventure - and how many other action games can make you laugh out loud?) the story is interesting, the satire is sometimes very good (it rips off scenes from famous films very well), and the graphics are great. Alright, so nowadays N64 graphics won't wow anyone, but even today they look like a (low resolution, cheaply made) cartoon, which really adds to the atmosphere. The first half of the game is almost what Rare wanted it to be originally, a cute 3D platform game. But for some reason, partway through CBFD's development, Rare changed the game, and made it more 'mature', by which they mean they added immature references to sex and bodily functions, made the violence much more graphic, added in lots of swearing (some bleeped out, some not) etc. Even the cute cartoonish creatures from the first half of the game become foul mouthed. And the second half of the game is filled with movie parodies, sometime very amusing to watch. As a result of the over the top violence and lewd jokes, Nintendo didn't particularly want anything to do with the game, and the game received very little advertising, and not many copies were made, so the game didn't sell well, which is a shame since it's so good. It was Rare's last N64 game.

                    It is amazing what Rare got away with in CBFD, considering this was on a Nintendo console, in the year 2001. When you boot the game up, the boot up animation is of Conker destroying a trembling logo of the N64, and I have no idea how Nintendo let Rare put that in.

                    Anyway, back to the gameplay; In multiplayer there are seven different modes, all with bots (computer controlled players to play against), and some of the modes are *fantastic*. Beach, and Heist, are really good, but War: Colours is by far my favourite - it's sort of like Team Fortress, but you decide your class by the weapon you choose, so you can change your 'class' by picking up a different weapon (you can only carry one weapon, and when you pick up a new one then you lose the old one) - for example if you have the Katana (sword) then you can jump higher, fall farther without getting hurt, and don't appear on the enemies weapons. If you have the bazooka then you move slower, etc. It only has one map, and one objective (capture the flag), so altogether it doesn't sound too great. But I've probably spent more time just playing this one game mode, against the (great) bots, than I've spent playing most of my other games put together. It really is fantastic.

                    NB. When Microsoft bought Rare from Nintendo, Rare announced that they'd be re-releasing CBFD with all of the bits that Nintendo made Rare leave out, and calling it Conker: Live and Uncut (the 'Live' part because the game would be using the XBox Live! online service for multiplayer, and the 'Uncut' part because the game would feature all of the levels/jokes/satires that Nintendo (who were notorious for cencorship) had forced Rare to leave out of CBFD...). We Conker fans were very excited indeed. And we waited. And waited, as the game took ages to appear.

                    When it did, it was called Conker: Live and Reloaded, and didn't have any of the 'cut' N64 parts in it. In fact, the XBox game was more censored than the N64 version (which ruined some of the game's jokes and cut-scenes, and by the way, who'd have thought that Microsoft would be more prudish than Nintendo?) and was missing at least one of the areas/game tasks from the N64 version. Also, the XBox game lost some of the visual touches that made the N64 version so interesting, and made some minor changes (usually for the worst). On the plus side, the game was gorgeous, maybe the best looking game of all time on the XBox, and far superior graphically to the N64 version. But even here it was actually a loss, as the N64 version looked like a cartoon, whereas the fantastically detailed XBox game looked too good for a cartoon, so the atmosphere suffered.

                    And the multiplayer, depending on who you spoke to, varied from pretty good to awful. Many found it confusing and un-enjoyable, with lots of questionable design decisions (you couldn't even turn off the above-their-heads names of everyone onscreen, and since the bots tended to have long and unfunny names, this cluttered up the screen, and it did away with much of the N64's multiplayer's variety.

                    Rare have fallen so far, since they moved to Microsoft.

                    Edit: When you've played CBFD, you might want to watch the director's commentary, at;

                    http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list...ZWUEV0vaSL4rHf

                    which is a few of the people who worked on the game playing through it and discussing the game, themselves, and how much the industry has changed (mostly for the worst, it seems) between then (~2001) and now. Probably best if you don't watch much of it until you've played the game through, as of course the videos are full of spoilers.

                    I really wish other games developers would do this sort of thing about their games.

                      I suppose it is possible I'd put them in the wrong format or named the text file wrong, though it's not the sort of mistake I'd think I'd make (I make lots of mistakes, don't get me wrong, but usually I double check things like filenames or text formatting). I'll give it another go, and thanks for the links too, mate.
