  • (Request) The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker - Hero mode on Gamecube

Hi. When I saw the Hero mode in Wii U version of Wind Waker I began to wonder if it would be possible to achieve the same thing in Gamecube version through codes.

Hero mode doubles the damage Link takes and make it so the recovery hearts won't ever appear, so you have to rely on the potions and fairies.

Good news is the double damage code already exists:

Link Takes Double Damage (donny2112) - from Wind Waker
    2ZE2-9RFQ-19Y6U
    81T2-W09H-35FH2
    2FQK-3B4U-2KNX5
    EMF5-HNNF-UHTTR
    6X52-QE2G-E613M
    YKP2-HQE9-3A9AH
    EWQQ-5UXG-0MRR0
    XXMJ-VB7J-3202C

Now - would it be possible to make a code to disable recovery hearts?

Hero mode is available when you have beaten the game once, after the credits roll you can save your game then after that when starting a new game choose the the completed save file file. Link will also be wearing his casual clothes throughout the game instead of the green tunic.

That's unfortunately not true. I agree there's another game mode when you beat the game, but the only difference is that Link wears different outfit, as well as his sister, and you can read Hylian text. Plus you'll get color pictograph right at the beginning. Maybe locating treasure is more difficult, beside that the game is still equally difficult (enemies do normal damage and you can get recovery hearts).

Oh, well I haven't went through it in a while and I thought it was the same thing. Sorry.

I gave it some thought and started to doubt if it is even possible. The problem is there's no item in the game that directly raises the chance of a heart appearing so finding the probability modificator would be extremely difficult. And what's more we don't know for sure if it's just one modificator that applies to everything or if every object (like grass or a vase or a monster) has it's own. Not without direct access to the source code of the game.
But I thought of an alternative - is it possible for a heart refill to replenish no life energy when you pick it up?

Ralf, a Gamecube hacking pro, hacked this exact code you are requesting. However, it was for PAL and it was on gscentral which is currently down right now. However, I can ask him to port it and there is about a 99% chance he will do it. I can't contact him until gscentral goes back up again.

Do you mean the original request or my second (alternative) request? Either way it's good news and you made my day. It's good to know something like this is possible.

                The first one.
Honestly. Your alternative sounds really easy to hack, but I can only hack Gamecube games with Dolphin, and Dolphin.... Kinda sucks a mountain of dicks when it comes to hacking codes.

For now, you'll just have to wait for gscentral to return. It is moving hosts right now. After that, I can ask Ralf, and he will more than likely hack the code.

Well I've waited for months now and GSCentral is still not functional. I don't know what they're doing. Isn't there any other way to contact Ralf?

It would be awesome to have a no-hearts hack. In the meanwhile I guess you can play without picking up extra heart containers for increased difficulty.

I am deeply sorry, but I can only contact Ralf on gscentral. Nobody has seen him in months. I am really sorry, Paar86. Maybe I can try looking around for him.

You'll need to sign up to send him a PM. But I am sure he will help.. That is.... If you're still around or if you still care........

I sent him a message, thank you for the info . I will share the code with you if he'll post it to me (with his permission of course).

Good news. I contacted Ralf and discovered that he already made the "Hero mode" codes for US version of the Wind Waker. Even more, he did the same for the Twilight Princess. Enjoy!
