Spy vs Spy as well. I would love to be proven wrong on this RC Pro Am thing, but I say there is a 99 44/100% chance you imagined/dreamed this. Ever do LSD?

Xenophobe had 2 player split screen, but that's a horrible game.

Yes, I'm serious. I'm fairly certain it has something to do with the 2nd player controller as far as activating 2 player mode.
Okay, you all know how you can recall very specific details from your childhood like, "This one time, I was playing RC Pro-AM on NES with my little brother, which we thought was a one-player game, and he pushed something that let him play too," but not little details like, "He pushed ___ to enable it!?" Yeah...that's the situation. It does a split-screen. We played that game all day when he enabled it.
I've downloaded JNES and the Rom for it. It's not a Game Genie code, but something that has to be done on the controller. I'm wondering if something needs to be held when you start the game. Not certain though.

The 2-player thing works in some versions (not sure if it does on NES) but that is refering to a mode where you play by yourself but you take turns, like in SMB for example.

What we played was simultaneous because we would argue who would get to play with the joystick (we only had one) and who would get to pick up the horse powerup in any given level.

I'm not the only one! From what I can find, Gun Smoke needs to have the second player press Start to begin a 2-player game.
But I've pushed everything I can on the JNES ROM to try to find the 2-player mode and I can't seem to. Does anyone know if JNES allows buttons to be held and registered when a game is being started (like powered-on)? If I have to go to Vintage Stock and get an NES and RC Pro-AM, I will!

Speaking of recalling such things, I specifically recall playing Gun.Smoke on the NES with two players on more than one occasion.

Like, I would play it with my brother day in and day out in 2-player mode when we were younger. The only problem with this memory is that when we recently were going to play it again, there was no way to pick two players. I then proceeded to test out every available ROM of the game and none of them had the option either.

We both were fully convinced that we used to play it together but looking at it now, it seems impossible..?

I'd love to believe this is true, but I'm calling bullshit.

Not quite sure what you mean. If you can't "trigger" it, then how are you certain that it allows 2 players?
I'm certain because I've accidentally enabled it twice without the use of a Game Genie. This happened during an argument with my younger brother over who was going to play the game. I used to give him the other controller and have him pretend that he was playing, but twice the game actually enabled the second player to play. Both vehicles had place markers over them and could be driven by their respective players. If I recall, he was able to drive the green car and I was able to drive the blue.
I know because I've done it by complete accident on two occasions. We verified that it was the case though neither of us knew what one of us pushed to make it so.

This Game Genie code will put a timer on the Title Screen of R.C. Pro-Am (U) (PRG0):
    EIXSSAEY

    ---------------
Well, the only thing I managed to change the "Press Start For" text to was Continue, instead of Player 1.

Here's the other useless codes I came up with:
    EINIEAEY Cycle Thru Screens
    EYXIOAEI Continue
    EYVSAYEI No Copyright Text

I've only ever played it on the GameBoy and 2 players was never an option on that device so not sure what to think about this theory of yours.
I can assure you that it's no theory. This is the RC Pro-AM for the NES that I'm talking about. Not RC Pro-AM II, not for the Gameboy, but I've posted this everywhere and wondering who's going to pickup the ball. People have been complaining about it for years, but the option has actually been there the entire time! ^_^ It changes the "Press Start for 1 Player" to "Press Start for 2 Players".
Since I never had 4 controllers for the NES, a theory would be that it goes to 4. But I only for certain that it allows 2 players. What I don't know is how to trigger it. But it's about time for it to come out, isn't it? I don't want it to become another Donkey Kong secret. ;-)
Take into account that it was also an arcade game. This MIGHT be of help to you.

started a topic RC Pro-AM for NES Secret Mode

RC Pro-AM for NES Secret Mode

    It's a Secret to Everybody:
A second racer there can be,
Only if you know the key.
To find the answer, search around,
Your friend will know when the key is found.

You can either look in the game code itself, or start checking every button you can think of.
It exists, but I'm one of the few who knows...until now.

    Good luck gamers!
