I've been on a temporary codehacking burnout lately, so I've been playing some old games with recently-made patches or hacks. A very good one is the Super C Hell Hack by Finisher. (Quite an appropriate name for this hack!)
It features a great many more common enemies than the original Super C, with a lot more gaps to precisely jump across. However, the bosses are the same, except with enhanced coloration. Also, all chars move faster, both yours and the enemies.(The stages are aptly called "waves".)
The Crypto-Crustacean boss spits out more skulls and blobs, and is even tougher than the original.
in the 5th stage, the "Blue Meanies" are very numerous, and for most players, using "thrash mode" with a spread gun is about the only way to make it to the boss' lair.
The last stage(wave) is a LOT harder than the original, with hordes of aliens coming from both left and right, as well as many more of those "mouths" that give off those little fireballs that suddenly come at you, as well as being longer, with many precise jumps required.
I tried beating it w/o using any codes, but couldn't. And I can still usually beat the original Super C w/o codes & w/o losing a life. Finally, I faced the inevitable and used the "infinite lives" code.
Good News: All the Super C codes work on this patched version! (patches easily with the Lunar patch tool)
Bad News: The patch won't work on every version of Super C, nor on all emus. I succeeded with patching the hack on a Super C (U) rom, on the latest FCEUX emu.
This hack should be quite a challenge for those looking for tough NES shooters.
