i noticed some text in courier crisis saying "test mode" (80010658) and "contest mode" (80010664)
any ideas on how i can get them activated?

Look for additional passwords. There might also be a button cheat to unlock those modes. I can look into it if you want me, too.

Off-topic: The graphics in this game remind me of the ESPN Xtreme games (1X, 2X, and 3X).

The "Test Mode" and "Contest Mode" look to be passwords themselves. There is also an "E3 Mode," and possibly a record feature ("Record"). However, they don't fit the password entry format (no spaces allowed). So, you can try modifying the names to fit the ten letter limit, that the password system uses. And, yes, it's possible to check for button cheats without an emulator.

Oh, and you may want to add a check to your codes, as the main menu and game modes load from a separate executable (GAME.EXE). The bootup screens are loaded by the SLUS file.

Ah, OK.

Yes. The hidden character passwords are located elsewhere, though:

I got "Test Mode" and the others to "activate," I think. The first line in the codes is just the ENTRYPOINT address of the GAME.EXE file.

Update: These don't activate said mode. It just forces the text to display, as if it was enabled.

The previous codes I made don't activate the modes. I didn't figure out the other passwords, but the "Free Mode" password is: HANOILBKJO. Source

This address allows you to enable the other modes. Now I really think there is a password for the other modes.

Test Mode Features:
- Language Option unlocked (audio options). This is useless in the NTSC version, as the necessary data is missing (levels won't load).
- All areas unlocked.
- Press Up or Down to cycle through the levels. All levels are not available for each area.
- Press Select in-game to fail the level, and Start to pass it.
- Press L2+R2 in-game to cycle through the characters (not visually). I don't know how to make the selection stay). This address is written to when cycling through the biker names: 300A15B0 (00-11; don't use 10).

Contest Mode Features:
- All areas unlocked.
- This forces the player to be "STS-1," and playing the game on "Level 12".

E3 Mode Features:
- All areas are unlocked.
- This forces the player to be "Pro Freestlyle Tour Team"

Free Mode Features:
- Purchase any bike regardless of your cash flow.
- Press Up or Down to cycle through the levels (15 max). All levels are not available for each area.
- Areas are unlocked when you cycle through the levels.
