  • My most desired cheat code request ever - (For advanced hackers only)

This is the cheat code that I've wanted the most. From what I was told, it is difficult to make. I will copy and paste the short conversation I had when I requested it a long time ago in Nolberto's thread, just in case some advanced hackers never saw it. I'm hoping somebody like BeyondTheStatic, Tony Hedstrom, helder, Nolberto, etc. or any other advanced hacker will be able to figure it out. Here is my request:

Is it possible to make a cheat code for (NES) "Bad News Baseball" that will give my team full attributes? Meaning have each player on my team have the fastest running speed, the strongest throwing arm, the best fielding skills, and the best hitting? I don't know if you are familiar with the game but it is my favorite NES baseball game and a game that I have the most nostalgia for playing against friends.

I have never played it before. I already looked at it and both teams use the same rom addresses for everything. If you change something for your team the other team will be affected too.
That doesn't matter, that would be fine. I probably would prefer it that way, this way the CPU would be more challenging.

Incase you need to know this info, each player's:

Running speed (R) is rated # 1-8. With 1 being the slowest and 8 being the fastest.

Arm Strength (A) is also rated # 1-8. With 1 being the weakest and 8 being the strongest.

Fielding skills is graded "-" through "A". The grade "-" represents the player is terrible at that particular position and an "A" means the player is great at that particular position. "C" means he is average and "B" means hes good at that position.

The player's Homeruns and Batting Average is self explanatory. Player's attributes never change throughout the season, regardless of how well or poor he plays. So a player will always have the same Batting Average, Homeruns, Arm Strength, Running Speed, and Fielding Skills for every game.

I already knew most of that after looking at the game. Yesterday I told you about the CPU using the same rom addresses. Is even worse than I thought the game uses one function for graphics and most attributes if not all of them.

Means anyone who can hack the codes he wants since he is new to hacking and would need someone more experienced.

This will change the running and throwing speed for the first player of SF team. The problem of doing this way is that you need multiple code for one team.

              Code:
              YYOALOAS

You're right, this isn't a very easy task.

Using the address nolberto82 found, it was easy to find the place where all the values are loaded up, but I don't know if they will affect the actual game play at all. You tell me. The names will all be the same, each letter loaded as the same image, and the other stats will have letters instead of numbers. It affects all teams.

                Code:
                Stats: AV=.C7C HR=7C B=R Ca123S0 = CAABCA A=8 R=8
                OXVSPLOU
                TNVSZUTE

                Stats: AV=.LLL HR=LL B=L Ca123S0 = AAAAAA A=7 R=8
                OXVSPLOU
                NNVSZUTE

OldSchool, I found something interesting... I was trying to see if there was perhaps a hidden all-star team, and I discovered two teams not readily accessible from the menu! Are they bonus teams for beating the game, or what?

                  Code:
                  Not for the DB
                  [COLOR="#E6E6FA"]Bad News Baseball (U) NES

Ultra and Super Teams Available (player 1 only)
                  TAKEINGE
Note: When selecting a team, scroll down to Toronto, and then scroll back up to have access to the Ultra and Super teams.[/COLOR]
edit: Hmm. It would seem that the Super and S.F. teams are identical, and the Ultra and Texas teams are nearly the same, except for two players. Oh well

The two All-Star teams are not hidden teams. They are selectable in the title menu as "ALLSTARgame 1p" and "ALLSTARgame 2p". But there are other "hidden" teams in the game. You can play as an all GIRLS team. In fact, the whole league can be all girls. This is taken from GameFAQs to play in the all girls mode:

To access the girls' league, hold [DOWN]+[LEFT] on controller #1 and hold [UP] on controller #2. You can go ahead and hold these down before powering up your system, or by pressing the [RESET] button if you've already turned it on. Success will be yours if you see a heart insignia instead of a baseball on the menu screen.
You can also access the girls mode by using the Game Genie codes Hybrid made:

                    Code:
                    [B]Play as Girls Teams[/B]

                    PYEGZPLP
                    PAEGAPEP

                      NNVSZUTE
These codes make the whole defense (all the fielders) disappear. Plus the graphics are all glitchy. So when the pitcher throws the ball and you hit it, nobody is their to field the ball because all the fielders are missing. On the positive side, it appears that all my players' speed run fast.

Haha, that figures. I actually thought of trying that very same thing... right after turning off my computer last night :J

I didn't hold out much hope for them, but I thought I'd try anyway.

I'm not sure if what you're requesting is even possible with only a few codes. Everything important is loaded up in a single loop, including what you don't want changed.

One could jump to a point in freespace as soon as the game is loaded, and create a routine that writes new values for a given team. That way, only the addresses you wanted to have changed would be changed. But it's not something I can do yet, since I know only the very basics of indirect indexing, which is needed for making game loops in ASM. Plus, the number of codes might be kind of high.

OldSchool, do you know how to apply IPS patches to ROMs? I could perhaps hack the ROM itself to make one team superior. That way, I know that what I'm doing will work without producing glitches (it would be based on nolberto82's work), and you won't have a long list of codes to deal with.

Alternatively, I can make a Nestopia .nsp file.

If you're interested, tell me which team you want (New York?) to have changed. I'm willing to hack running speed, arm strength, and fielding skills. I might work on two teams, that way you're both matched, skill-wise.

Either one will take some time, as I'm currently busy with other projects.

Yea, all you got to do is FILE > OPEN > ROM and then you do FILE > OPEN > IPS Patch. It's the same way you load a ROM... you just load the IPS patch once the ROM is already loaded. At least that's how it's done in Nestopia.

I could perhaps hack the ROM itself to make one team superior. That way, I know that what I'm doing will work without producing glitches (it would be based on nolberto82's work), and you won't have a long list of codes to deal with.
                              Yea, that would be nice.

I assuming that is the ROM with the IPS Patch already attached to it (built into it)?

In deciding whether to make an IPS Patch or a Nestopia .nsp file... I guess whichever is easier for you. If it doesn't matter, then I guess an IPS Patch since it can be used in other emulators as well, instead of just Nestopia.

If you're interested, tell me which team you want (New York?) to have changed. I'm willing to hack running speed, arm strength, and fielding skills.
Believe it or not, my favorite team in that game is Boston... (even though in real life, I hate the Boston Redsox since the New York Yankees are my favorite team.) So I'd like you to hack Boston.

I might work on two teams, that way you're both matched, skill-wise.
Yea that would be cool since they would be evenly matched. So if you decide to hack a second team in that game, then hack New York.

Either one will take some time, as I'm currently busy with other projects.
Yea, no problem... take your time, no rush.

Thanks for taking the time to work on it
