  • Emulator or hardware and codes

For snes, pro-action replay codes made on emulator are NOT compatible with the actual hardware. No one noticed probably because who actually has a pro-action replay 2 and an SNES, AND an emulator, AND actually uses both. BlackGoddess made a code that works for the emulator (SMW2 Timer does not decrease) when a code made on the hardware didn't work for her. 00E310Ad is the official code but, will not work on the ZNES emulator. Her code that does work is 7E039101 + 7E039200. Comments....

    Emulator or hardware and codes

For most SNES codes made with a real PAR, but which don't work w/ZSNES, I use the Z's code finder & watch for codes fairly close to the failed PAR code. Conversely, I've found that some Z codes won't work with a real PAR.

I'm guessing the rom used by an emu may have a slightly different data arrangement or may not include certain elements found in a cart being read by a PAR.

The code 00E310AD is correct for my version of the game.

This is a banking issue that's caused by the game seeming to use RAM to hold bits of game code.

To use the above code normally, enter the code, reset the game, and use the in-game menus to load the save you want to use.

If you want to enable the effect of the code for a save-state you already have, do the following:
      Load the Save-State you have
      Enable the code 7EE310AD
      Re-save the Save-State
      Disable the code 7EE310AD
      Enable the code 00E310AD
      Load the Save-State again

This will put the code effect into RAM

That's interesting that there's incompatibility of that sort.

So are you saying that she is actually hacking the computers RAM and not the game?

No. I am hacking the RAM. The code that person made is hacking the ROM.

Code banking means switching a set area of information for a different set of information. In this case, in a most unusual set of circumstances, this game is running code from the RAM. I've not only never seen SNES code banking, but I've also never seen the SNES running code from RAM like that before.

Since the code from the ROM is being stored to RAM and run from there, the only reason I can find for the cheat code not working for you is that the cheat code was activated in the emulator after the ROM data had already been copied to RAM.

I explained the method above to let you activate the code immediately, but it's quite possibly the second most baffling SNES mechanism I've ever dealt with.

You really need to remember that that's been designed for a real system, and real systems have Game Genie and PAR codes turned on from the moment the game starts. It would never have this problem when used on a real SNES, because the code would always have been on from the time the game was turned on.

Is it possible to emulate the game genie and action replay carts at all? Has anybody even tried it?

FCEU can use a real GG cart ROM the way it would normally work. The only problem with using a Cart ROM alone is that without the hardware end of the device, there's nothing to tell it how it should work.

Either way, Galoob seems to have allowed at least some of their ROMs to be distributed freely. They can be loaded into an emulator easily, but generally act like an infinite number of the same cart chained together. I've previously experimented with trying to chain a GG ROM to the game ROM itself, but due to the structure of the ROMs and the lack of hardware, it didn't work.

Ah, I didn't realize that was the case. That kind of brings up the question of how it was reading attached carts...
