  • Enable scrolling backwards for some NES game

    I have a question about the scrolling in following NES games:
    • Contra;
    • Guerrilla War;
    • Hudson's Adventure Island;
    • Hudson's Adventure Island 3;
    • Robo Warrior;
    • Super C;
    • Super Mario Bros.

    In these NES games, when I go forward (usually to right), the screen also scrolls forwards with my character. But if I try to go back (usually to left), then my character can't go far than the left side of the screen because the screen don't scroll backwards.

    I now ask: are possilbe any GameGenie codes for the games listed above that enable also scrolling backwards (instead only forwards)?

    Is this even possible? Are there any "scroll backwards" codes for other games?
    US NES games left to beat: 3
    Last 2: Nobunaga's Ambition II and Gemfire

      That would be interesting if it was possible. And AdamL... when are you going to beat those last 3 NES games? U should make some cheat codes for that piano game to help you beat it.

        It doesn't need cheat codes. All you have to do is skip lessons and you'll see the "ending".

        He doesn't beat those last 3 games because he is now playing with the dark side of the force.

          Backward scrolling would be awesome, never thought about that...

            I think it would take many codes to make it move backwards. If the routine isn't there already your basically talking about creating a second routine that does the opposite of the current forward one (this in itself would be many codes), and then making a trigger call for it (finding just the right spot to not break everything). I think it would be cool but I also think it would be a lot of work and may be easier implemented as a hacked rom instead of via codes.

              I don't get what you mean. Who said anything about endings? And what do you mean by "skip lessons"?

              And I'm having deja vu. I could have sworn that I mentioned that suggestion about "scrolling backwards" months ago.

                  haha... Ohhh... I was thinking you were talking about the "scrolling backwards" things.

                  But I wonder if he did what you suggested, if that would count as technically "beating" a game. I know he uses cheat codes to help him beat the NES games, but would skipping the entire game so you can go straight to the ending actually count as beating the game? Also would using a cheat code that makes you "Start at the Last Level/Boss" count as technically beating a game? Would a cheat code such as "Begin Game To See The Ending" count as beating a game? In my opinion, I'm not sure if I'd consider that as beating a game. In my opinion, that wouldn't count. I think it's okay to use things such as warps (ie: Super Mario Bros.) to skip levels. But warps like that are built into the game and are supposed to be utilized.

                    Well, what he and I do is not so much "beating" games, but chronicling their endings.

                    Miracle Piano is not a game, it doesn't matter if you pass or fail the lessons, you have to skip lessons to go to the next one. Besides, I don't think Adam even remembers what the NES is anymore :P

                      In Lost levels if you use warps your unable to play the last 4 worlds.

                        Heh, fair statement I guess

                        I actually haven't beaten a video game for a couple months. At some point I want to get back into my guide, which I seem to do every Fall/Winter. Some of the newer codes, like pressing start to finish the level, will help with some of the games I need to beat again for ending documentation. If I would have started this ending doc in 2000 I would be finished the NES part by now, but I have had to go through and re-finish every game I beat before starting the guide to get the ending descriptions. Then Mr. Esteban will either find a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th or 5th) ending to a game and I will have to rewrite it over again, but that is for the best. Thank God you are thorough dude, or half of those endings in teh guide would be incomplete.

                        But yeah, I was into SMS for awhile and still want to flesh out that guide a lot more (and since there are a lot less SMS would be a lot easier to complete at least the American games), but I'm on an old movie kick, so once I knock the DVR recorded list down to 10% or so I'll get back into gaming.

                        So back to codes and stuff, I'm wondering if some of the games that auto scroll you could be made to only scroll you when you move in the direction of the scroll. No particular game pops into my head...maybe Life Force?
