  • Question about codes found for Street Fighter 2: Special Champion Edition (Genesis)

I was typing in random Game Genie codes for Street Fighter 2 Special Champion Edition for the Genesis & found two different codes. I'm wondering if someone could explain these to me.

Both of these codes bring up message that says "03 Address Error" at the top the screen. There also appears to be a series of values & addresses that you can scroll through. Pressing up & down scrolls through them. Hitting B or C will bring those addresses to a certain point. One thing is if you hit start, it will take you away from that screen, but you can't continue playing.

    SEDA-ACCE
Brings you to the address error message after the Capcom logo appears

    PEBA-AEHC
Brings you to the address error message after the Vs. screen

Maybe someone who knows more than I do could tell what this is. I've never seen anything like that before.

I tried the SEDA-ACCE code on 2 different emulators and didn't get any error message (just some glitchy graphics). The other code doesn't appear to do anything. Are you using the US cartridge/ROM? Are you using real hardware or an emulator?

I've seen some other games that do this. It may be a little built-in debugger. It might be showing you the ROM address where the error occurred, or maybe the registers.

      looks like a crash handler

I'm using a US cartridge on a Generation 1 Sega Genesis (since the Game Genie won't work on the 2nd or 3rd Genesis). The screen that Hybrid posted is exactly what I saw. I thought maybe someone who has a bit more experience than I do, would be able to use it to get additional codes for that game. Other than what I posted about it, I'm not sure how I would use it.

What exactly is a crash handler?

basically its used when debugging games and programs it shows the registers and a memory viewer i cannot make heads or tails of it but none the less its a feature used to help programmers figure out where theres an error in their code

Very interesting. The copy of this game I've got used to show that screen when starting arcade mode, selecting chun li, and hitting any kick button in the first round. Then when I remembered about that it stubbornly refused to crash again. Great to see somebody figured out how to intentionally trigger that display.

The "A0 thru A7" and "D0 thru D7" are the Address and Data registers.

The "PC 00000646" means the problem occurred at ROM address $000646 (i.e. that's were the program stopped).

And of course the "FF0000, FF0008", etc are the addresses/values in RAM.

EDIT: I must have used a different version. I couldn't get that screen.

It turns out that those aren't the only codes that do that. I have been attempting to use random codes, & almost everytime I try to play with a full set of codes, I'll get a one of those screens to appear. I did find one screen that popped up that said "04 Illegal Command". I might have to to work from other people's codes (scraps) or just leave it to the experts to hack this game.
