Found a Japanese Debug Menu (Genesis)

The Sega Genesis game Batman: Revenge of the Joker contains disabled passwords as well as a Cheat Mode. Five boss fight passwords were disabled by being an exact copy of another password.

Known Effects of Cheat Mode:
1. Can start on the stage of choice by using any password.
2. Pressing Start on controller 2 will pause the game, likely for screenshot taking.
3. Pressing the A button on controller 2 during gameplay will skip to the next stage.
4. Pressing the B button on controller 2 during gameplay will show the end game credits.
5. Pressing the C button on controller 2 during gameplay will restore Batman's health.

Because I had found a push-button debug mode cheat for the Game Gear version years ago, I decided to check the game and got lucky.

Having trouble with Thunder Fox for Genesis, hopefully someone else could figure it out. There seems to be a new menu to be found, and push-button cheat. The already known cheat involves changing Music to 13 and Sound to 24 in the options menu. After that you highlight Exit and press A, B, C. The following menu will show:

The 3 button controller cheat (A, B, C) for the "Configuration Mode" is located at ROM address $003096.

This Game Genie code will show the extra text you found in the ROM: 04JT-AEH0 (completely useless besides that). Just use the music #13, sound #24 cheat to see the text.

The second to last instruction (00:8F70 12 1E MOVE.b (A6)+,D1) is moving the first button press for the cheat to register D1. The ROM address for A6 is 009036.

Mez, didn't find anything else. I don't think there are any other music/sound cheats. I checked the ROM for every occurrence of the RAM address for the music number, and only found compares for music numbers 13 and 19. The 13 is for the cheat, and the 19 is because there are 19 music tracks. The extra menu text you found must be accessed some other way or possibly uses the same music/sound combo as the other cheat. If I find anything else, I'll let you know.

I likely didn't pay it much mind back then since I wasn't really looking at much Genesis stuff.

Spot Goes to Hollywood (Genesis)

The Sega Genesis game Spot Goes to Hollywood has a Debug Menu that at minimum contains this text:

So far I've been unable to access it, but I did find push-button codes in the process.

The unknown effects of the three cheats are as follows:
ARDBLUBBA - Start the game using the password PROGRESS. Then pause the game and enter the button cheat. It loads a slot machine mini-game with pictures of the programmer's faces.
UBBABALL - Start the game using one of the following passwords CHASDAVE, WORMBALL, TRUELOVE, HANDYBAG, LOVELIFE. Then pause the game and enter the button cheat. Each password give a different developer message.
BLADDURACUD - The mine cart accelerates on flat terrain and has a higher top speed.

Genesis "Master Codes"

Over the last few days, I've been using this (http://gamehacking.org/downloads/CCCGP.7z) program to patch some ROM codes into some Sega Genesis games that were released in the USA, for a friend of mine.

I quickly noticed that a lot of games would not boot after being permanently patched.
Thanks to Tony Hedstrom's guide (http://gamehacking.org/vb/threads/44...t-master-codes), I was able to fix this problem.

Genesis PAR codes that do NOT start with FF can be used on a Genesis Game Genie (after being encrypted), so therefor are also supported in the patching program. (Another words If you want to add un-encryped Game Genie codes, choose the PAR option.)

So without further ado, here are some PAR/Game Genie codes for USA ROMs to boot up with bad/modified checksums.
Note that not all of these are required, if you were to fix the checksum with a program such as this (http://ucon64.sourceforge.net/), that is why I didn't call them Master Codes yet.

Apparently some EA games wont run thru a cheat cartridge, guess they didn't like their games being code hacked; or maybe the PAR modifies the ROM even with no codes enabled.

Here is an easy way to test if a game could benefit from such a code:
1. Open Fusion, and make sure the option "autofix checksums" is not checked. (If you had to uncheck it, close fusion to save the changes.)
2. Open a ROM and press Alt+G and enter in a ROM code. If there are no Game Genie codes for the game make up one, such as this 001234:6000.
3. Press Tab to reset the game.
4. If the game does not run like it normally would, such as show a red, blue or black screen, then there is likely a checksum check.


Besides the usual Red or Black Screen of Death, here are a couple different ways a game could notify you of a bad checksum:

Some Patches...

Until I get around to opening some recent hacks in a hex editor to get the offsets, here are some patches for a handful of USA released Sega Genesis games.

Note: If the patch name has this in it's title "[c]", it means that the patch does NOT include a checksum bypass.
After patching with those, the game will not boot until you fix the checksum or use a bypass code.

I typically think of Invincibility as just Infinite Health, and Invulnerability as Walk Thru Enemies, so I named them to cause a little less confusion.

That is exactly the same "test" code I use when I'm testing to see if a game needs a master code. lol.

I accidentally stumbled across this one while punching in random Game Genie codes. It would usually kick in just after the plane flies to the stage you are about to start on. One other time, I got hit & the screen popped up. I'm not sure what those screens are supposed to mean.
