The NES GAR is super rare but a great gadget. Is there any kind of newer product out there that does the same thing for the original NES but is cheaper and easier to get? There must be some Taiwanese knockoff somewhere right?

I have one of these- http://www.retrousb.com/product_info...products_id=36 (copyNES). I don't think it does RTS, but it will read and write to sram, so I can switch saves between the carts and emulators. It also dumps carts, lets you debug on real hardware, (though it's pretty slow), and I can load up roms using the flash cart.
It's worth it if you are good with a solder gun, since you have to remove the 6502 from your board and replace it with a socket.
There's also an option to "fix" the Game Action Replay you speak of, since it seems it can corrupt when you replace the battery.
