Members of PSX-Scene have managed to get a homebrew method for creating encrypted ps2 "upgrade" files capable of running on most if not all models (including the slim units). But I'm not going to go into much detail regarding how and what was done. Most of the information is here: http://psx-scene.com/forums/freevast/
Thanks to some odd problems I had with writing the generated memory card images to the appropriate hardware a somewhat alternate means of getting this to work was figured out with some great help by skiller.
If hdproject/mcflasher fails to rewrite a card, the files from the card image can be extracted and copied onto a victim memory card. There are some slight drawbacks doing so. For one, the cards are supposed to have most of the filenames attached to the same large encrypted ELF.
