  • [N64] Looking to Fix Super Smash Bros?

    Hi All,

Not sure if this is the right place, but this forum appears to be the only place I could find someone with the expertise I need.

Many years ago (well over 10 years) I was messing around with a gameshark on this game (an actual n64 cartridge not an emulator). I was trying various codes (particularly I was trying ones to play as Metal Mario and Master Hand and they didn't work).

Ever since I tried those codes, my game functions completely normally EXCEPT one glitch has consistently occurred. When I go to do single player, no matter which character I choose the game selects Mario for the whole campaign. A year or so ago, I was searching online and I found someone claiming to have the same problem and he even mentioned which code was said to have caused it but when I was searching today today I can't seem to find that anywhere or any other evidence such a glitch exists. I could provide evidence if needed... but really all I want to do is revert this game back to normal, so that it works as it should if I ever go to play it again for the sake of nostalgia.

Any suggestions are appreciated, and I will give any more info that is needed, but this legit happened over a decade ago, I don't know the exact code I used, but it definitely was one that CLAIMED to allow me to play as one of the 2 characters mentioned above.

That is interesting. So this happens even without the Game Shark attached?

Correct. I just go to play the game normally, and everything looks normal, vs. mode has been completely normal as far as I can tell. But if it's single player I will select any character then it will say "Mario vs. Link" and I'll be Mario regardless of character chosen.

Would it still do that even if you erased all saved game data?

I'm pretty sure it couldn't have corrupted the ROM, so bungholio might have a good idea (since the save files are the only thing it could have corrupted).

Wow! so easy. Kind of a shame I lost unlocked characters and all other records, but I'm glad to have it fixed.

I keep all my old video games, so from time-to-time I'd think about this game and how it doesn't function properly.

I wonder how long it would take for me to get the hang of the game and unlock the 4 characters legitimately again : )

            Thanks guys!
