  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Game Genie Codes (Mainly Music Codes)

OK, so recently I came across a video that has some codes in it for Sonic 2 that change the music id's that play where. So I thought I'd post them here and possibly make more using those as a base for Game Genie codes that do the same thing. Using a hex editor, I was able to get into the Sonic 2 ROM for the unedited values. Now at first I didn't know what they were, but luckily I came across this: http://info.sonicretro.org/SCHG:Musi...#Sonic_2_Final, which gave me everything I needed. Mainly what I intend to do with this knowledge is swap certain location music, like the 2P music for the 1P music and vice versa, etc. While I myself don't have much in the way of codes made, what I do have already is from the video and from comments on the video, and I hope (with help) to be able to make more from this.

Oh, and one thing: While these are game genie codes, they do modify data inside the game and thus requires you to do a HARD reset of the game once activated because of the IDs in the sound driver being modified. As such, I recommend using these with the Rev01 (aka (World) (Rev A)) rom as there is already a master code here, just in case you get the red screen of death. Also, I have tested these in both Fusion AND Gens, both giving me the same result every time.

But without further ado, here are the codes I have:

TDHT-6BB8 - This plays the 2P Casino Night theme in the 1P zone.
WSHT-7HCR - This plays the Super Sonic theme as the invincibility track.
VXHT-71CE - This plays Sound Test 10 (Hidden Palace) in Sky Chase and Sky Chase's theme in Wing Fortress.
T9HT-67CE - This plays Death Egg (Part 1) in Chemical Plant.
TDHT-6BB4 - This plays the 2P Casino Night theme in Oil Ocean.
T1HT-67CG - This plays the 2P Mystic Cave theme in Hidden Palace.
WHHT-6BB0 - This plays the 2P Emerald Hill theme in the 1P zone.

So there are the code I have found. From what I notice, the first 4-character set in all of these are in XXHT form, and the second 4-character set in all of these are in either 6XXX or 7XXX form. Knowing this, what I have read in the SCHG faq and with the other codes as a base, what would I need to do to be able to make Game Genie codes from scratch to choose what music plays where?

I waited a few days to avoid a double post for this. Anyways, after further investigation of the codes and how they work, I came to the conclusion that they overwrite the song originally in that slot AND any instances of that song, thus making my original idea impossible. However, I WAS able to figure out an alternate way with some help from SSRG members, and here are the new codes I came up with. Just a note that I'm taking these straight from the IRC and not using their Game Genie converted variants, which I have posted on the database already:

003EA0:8C82 - This plays the 2P theme for Emerald Hill in the 1P zone.
003EAA:8483 - This plays the 2P theme for Mystic Cave in the 1P zone.
003EAC:888E - This plays the 2P theme for Casino Night in the 1P zone.
003EB2:8282 - This plays the 1P theme for Emerald Hill in the 2P level.
003EBC:848B - This plays the 1P theme for Mystic Cave in the 2P level.
003EBE:898E - This plays the 1P theme for Casino Night in the 2P level.

As previously stated, the converted/encrypted Game Genie codes were submitted to the database last night. I might work later on one that switches the invincibility theme for the Super Sonic theme and vice versa, but I don't know at this point, given all the work I had to go through to try understanding the first method I had codes for.

OK, so this is a small bump. I'm wondering if it'd be possible to do the accelerate much faster codes that Tony Hedstrom did for Sonic 3 and Knuckles on Sonic 2. Or the Pause and Press B/C for high acceleration at least. :P
