You know how some codes will not work unless you have an advanced enough cheat device? Like some of the older ones couldn't even handle 8 byte codes? Many codes were made saying that they required version X.XX and above? Well, here is a mystery, ever see it happen the other way around? Years ago, when tinkering with my old Gameshark 1.99 I made a code by altering existing codes for Tomb Raider 1.1

    walk/run through boulders and spikes
    801dE202 0001

eventually I upgraded to the 2.0 The code no longer worked!

That I now find quite strange. What would really be different?

    Re: interesting observation

That's really weird. The only thing I can think of right now is that maybe 2.0 is sitting on top of that memory location, and 1.99 wasn't. But then, I'm thinking the older than 3.0 versions weren't sitting in the memory at all. The 3.0+ ones deffinately are, which is really obvious on known value searches with a gspro. Unfortunately there's very little information about what the psx cheat devices are actually doing. Maybe that's why there isn't cartridge support on the emulators...

I know it is possible to find the ROMS for all gameshark models including 1.97 I think. If you have an old cart you can flash it back and forth and see that this is true. BUT, REMEMBER! 1.99 and older cannot be upgraded beyond 1.99 which implies that 2.00 and above are physically different.

I bought some 2.xx gamesharks for $1.99 apeice. If I had more knowledge I would bust open the one I that I couldn't reflash and study it.
      Any ideas anyone?

        Re: interesting observation

I didn't know the 1.x versions couldn't be upgraded past 1.99. That would deffinately imply that there's a signifigant physical difference. You could just unscrew the case on a 1.x and a 2.x and see if there's anything obviously different looking. There should be at least one flash rom, another chip that's effectively the processor, the 25 pin conector, the psx port connector, and a switch. There's probably some other random bits, but the chips themselves are the most signifigant. Sadly the local used game store around here no longer has any gamesharks, as they've got a flat out ban on interact products...

Oddly enough, I just tried a quick search for the old upgrades, and all I got was crap relating to the ps2 gameshark... I'm sure the files are out there somewhere though.

I will look. I have seen the upgrades online before. I got gamesharks at powergamers. I will see if I can get a few more.

            Re: interesting observation

Well after eading the topic here, I cannot help in anytype of answers or such, but am 'aware' of that going on, a rather 'old' issue....but I remember buying a new GSPro (when they were 'new' ofcorse, it was a 3.0) and frankly holding off uusing the thing because ALOT of the then GS codes just would not work and were indeed 'different'.

I mean to that point I was pretty much not into editing or removing codes or anything, it was 1997 and FF7 was BIG...I had had alot of codes put in the 'by hand' way into my older first GS 1.99 and 2.00 I had. Then saw the GSPro and said well heck I just have to grab that, so I did and found the codes that listed same effects were different and all else. Also strange thing, I tried GSPro at first and found that the codes I knew would not work anylonger, so I removed it and took some time to even start using the thing.

As is putting in codes by hand is a bothersome time eatting issue, and well back then a game like FF7, spending that time just would not sit well, these were college days when weekends were all about game playing and such and code time blahhh who needed that....

So anyway, no help, sorry, but I am well aware of what Luigi is saying, as it has indeed been a good while (even before this place was around) but I do remember that, heck took me a whole year more or less to even get into using the GSPro as again, the first run codes just for alot of games just did not seem to work all too good.

Also on that ahhh the first original GS codes...hard to find those these days...all places have upgraded, even here, heck, to find an 'original' code I would have to dig out the game mags from those old days.
