Emulator (Game Genie) Codes Not Working: Zelda NES

I've been trying to play the original Legend of Zelda on an emulator, I've tried both Nestopia and FCEUX and it says the Game Genie codes are valid but nothing happens (I've tried the Blue Ring and infinite bombs). Tried the codes in game, and before and after I've created a character. I've also tried the Game Genie ROM mode on FCEUX with the same results.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

there are two versions of Legend of Zelda
are you using the correct version?
what are the codes you are using?
what version of the emulators are you using?
