  • Best PS1 Emu?

Taking Helder's advice, I installed no$psx on my PC & now have it working. Now, I hafta figure out how to enter codes, etc. (Trying to get some cheat device codes to work on an emu that won't work with EPSXE or PCSXR.) However, at least on my PC, ( a new ASUS with double Core 17 Intel, Windows 7) the no$psx video is quite inferior to the two emus named above.

To me, PCSXR, latest edition, plays the most games the most-smoothly, and can use the most cheat device codes of any of the current emus, and the codes are quite easu to enter. I simply make a .cht folder for each game & copy codes directly to it.

However, EPSXE is almost as good, with the PEC add-on containing many codes for many games. However, at least with the latest edition of EPSXE, it seemsta have a prob retaining codes entered into the PEC user database.

I've tried other emus such as AdriPSX & PSXEven, & they don't hold a candle to PCSXR or EPSXE, at least for me. What are YOUR opinions of these various emus? Anyone know of any others that might be better?

I don't know exactly what you mean by the "video" being inferior in no$psx, but that's probably because no$ emulators always give you the true graphics of the system and don't enhance them like EPSXE does. Or maybe you need to enable some filters to smooth things. Remember that PSX graphics and textures were incredibly blocky, but emulators like EPSXE have made people forget that by letting you play the games with high quality textures and framerates.

I haven't delved too deep into PSX emus for many years now. I like emulators that give me the true graphics, with no enhancements, so going from there I hear that that PCSX is good (there seems to be a few emus using that one as a base) such as http://pcsxr.codeplex.com and http://code.google.com/p/pcsxrr/

And there's http://code.google.com/p/psxjin/ too. What I like about the last two is that their interface is just like FCEUX and SNES9X.

I haven't tried no$psx yet. I like the idea of no$ emus, but I don't like using them because the author is too rigid when it comes to adding new options or letting you modify keys. But I guess a lot of people like it for the debugger.

You can try to download the latest pec codelist from my page or you can edit yourself with notepad anyway using ther latest versions of epsxe 1.80 or 1.90 you can use the cheat codes option of the emulator that supports a lot more codes than the pec one (you only need to extract the EPSXE CHEATS PACK NUMBERS-Z v.1.0 form my site in the cheat folder of epsxe) and you can edit any of the files to add codes by far epsxe is the most compatible of all the psx emus.

To find codes you can use pec o nocash psx

First, Gladiator, I appreciate all your work in making PS1 codes.

I'm using EPSXE 1.80, and it does a fine job. It's more stable and runs more games than previous versions. And I've found out an easy way to edit PEC that so far worx perfectly. I'll post it in a separate thread.

BTW, what's the addy for your site?

Using notepad or similar is the easy way to edit and the 1.90 is a better version (correct ape scape control and othe fixex) you only need to extract the exe in the same folder of teh 1.80 .

My site is http://psxdatacenter.com/ in the download part you can find the cheat packs and the pec codelist

Yeah, THANX! I was able to replace EPSXE 1.80 with 1.90 and it's indeed smoother with sharper graphics using Pete's 2.9 plugin. (However, the "timer-stopper" code, the "Body Temp Never Lowers on Gaea Cliffs" & the "No random battles" codes for FFVII still glitch the game.) Must be an emu issue, and, as I have beaten the game without using ANY codes, guess I'll just move on & accept the fact that some codes for some PS1 games just won't work on emus.

Great site, Glad! I appreciate all your work making it and putting all that info up!

Did you try with pec or with the cheat packs codes , the emu works better with the cheat pack codes ,supports a lot more and you can enable and disable then in a more secure way

When I played FFVII on emulator, I used ePSXe 1.5.2, 1.6.0 and maybe 1.7.0 towards the end and I never had any problems with the game freezing using no random battles. You could try either of these versions and see if the problem still persists for you.

Another possibility is to use the universal Super Joker Toggle code. It is a toggler for any codes that use its activation line, but only one joker toggler (to my knowledge) can be used at once; you can toggle as many codes as you want, but they will all activate/deactivate at the same time with the same button combination.

I put one together, which you can try out if you like (just enter them as two separate cheat entries):

                Super Joker Toggle Command
                D0062D78 0043 (L2 + R2 + X = Enable)
                80000002 4D43
                D0062D78 0023 (L2 + R2 + Circle = Disable)
                80000002 0000

                Toggled No Random Battles
                D0000002 4D43
                8011627C 0000
                D0000002 4D43
                8007173C 0000

When you hit the enable combination, it will freeze the values in the given codes to whatever was specified. Once the deactivation occurs, the codes will simply unfreeze and act as if no codes are enabled.

Gladiator, I'm just familiarizing myself with EPSXE 1.90, and I plan to learn to use "Cheat Engine" soon as I have the time. Been busy lately-my nephew's home burned down completely, they lost everything. Luckily, his insurance gave them $$ for clothes & a motel. They're gonna stay with his mom till they can rebuild. (Thank GOD no was home/injured!)

Battalion, thanx for the tips, but I already tried Joker commands. It seems once the codes have been activated for a certain gaming session or save, the glitch is permanent. For example, it freezes in the 7th heaven bar when Cloud, Tifa, & Barrett are starting out the door right after the Materia menu is activated.

However, I've never played FF VII on an EPSXE version lower than 1.70 I'll try a lower version and report the results. Thanx for the heads-up.

I found an easy way to solve my friend's prob with the "No Random Battles" code for FF VII not working on an emu...play the PAL version! Its "No Random Battles" code worx fine the whole game, with no glitches at all.

Here's something that may or may not be news to many readers here...on Game Faqs, there's a method to convert NTSC codes to PAL and vice versa.

                    http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197341-fi...vii/faqs/39969

I converted Liquid Man Zero's "Have All Materia" & "have all items" codes for FF VII to PAL using the info in that article, as his codes are much-better than the original PAL versions. However, since the conversion table begins at 8005, I couldn't convert Nolberto 82's "One-Hit Kills" for the same game.

This method works for all PS1 games that have both NTSC and PAL versions with codes, far as I know. I'm converting some codes for Arc The Lad 1 right now. To make sure my math is right, I convert everything from hexadecimal to decimal to do the necessary actions, then convert the results back to hex.

Just starting to learn howta use Cheat Engine. This old dog is still learning new trix. I'm gonna retire soon, I hope, and I gotta have something to do...can't make love or play basketball all the time.
