  • Killer Instinct Image View

This tool is designed to view the stored bitmaps within the KI/KI2 arcade image files, and has the ability to export them locally to a bitmap file. I remember seeing an application a long time ago (when Killer Instinct was first emulated) that could do something similar, but had very limited functionality (and has since been discontinued). Hopefully this tool will allow for new unused content to be uncovered in both games without any real "hacking" knowledge being required. Enjoy.

    Features:
    • File Contents Navigation (Progressively scan through bytes forward, backward, or by index address.)
    • Fine Tuning (Allows you to shift things slightly to get the best image possible.)
    • Auto Progress (Repeats your last action until disabled. Also has an option to increase repeat speed.)
    • 4x Image Scaling (Allows for very crisp images beyond their original resolution within reason without excessive blurring/distortion due to the images being redrawn larger instead of being stretched.)
    • OpenGL Integration (Faster image rendering & scaling.)
    • Alignment/Rotation Adjustment (Modifying the width value will rotate images.)
    • Export Images (Save what is currently in view to a local bitmap image in the directory of your choice.)
    • Supports KI/KI2 (KI2 has some image formats that are not supported as of yet. I will be working to resolve that in a future update.)
    • Bookmarks (Allows you to easily index the file position of a given image by name. This will allow you to "collect" a listing of positions within the file to return to at a later date, to share with others, etc...)

    Requirements:
    • Killer Instinct or Killer Instinct 2 .IMG Files (Will not work on CHDs! Convert your .chd file to .img using CHDMAN.)
    • Included DLLs (They are required for the OpenGL wrapper to work.)
    • .NET Framework (Version 4.5 or Higher. Sorry Windows XP!)

    Updated to Version 1.1

Added bookmark support, and corrected a color palette problem from the original build. Bookmarks will be file dependent (but all contained within Bookmarks.xml), and should auto load if any are present when the file is loaded. Still working on the secondary palette present within KI1 & KI2 that will reveal even more images once discovered. I have included my Bookmark.xml file to give you something to look at initially, but your images need to be named KI.img & KI2.img for my bookmarks to work with your files.

      This on Windows XP?

As soon as I extract it then try to open I get the error saying that it's not a valid Win32 application.

I'll check my settings for the executable. Sounds like the target platform may be set wrong.

I can't install .Net Framework 4.5 on Windows XP. At least I have a secondary computer with Windows 7.

Alright, I have re-uploaded a version that should be compatible with any 32/64 bit machine, but .net 4.5 is still required (sorry about Windows XP). Let me know if that corrects the issue arises on the windows 7 machine with the new upload. Didn't know anyone was still using Windows XP lol.

Anyways it did work on Windows 7, but the only IMG file I found on its hard drive was for KI2. I could see what appeared to be FMV frames and such.

Glad it worked for you. I am currently in the process of finding how what palette the stage intros, profile videos, and other related content use. You should be able to see background, character portraits, etc... using the selected palette it currently supports in both games. My main interest would be able to unlock the character sprites (there is an unused character named "Vampire" in KI2 that has walking/idle sprites remaining within the image), but as of yet I haven't found a way. You can see more of the unused content I've managed to recover in both games via the links below:

Arcade only since the console versions sucks ass compared to the Arcade, can't say anything bad about the n64 version since I bought that system mainly for that game and Mario 64 in the good old days.

Technically it should work with anything that uses the same 15/16 bit (555,565) image format. It should open most older game files, though the palette may be off on some of them.

I have been working on a continuation of this project that allows for the game sprites to be viewed as well. A user by the name TTRLovesMittens recently reversed the sprite draw routine found in both games, and shared his findings with me. In collaboration, we have built a program based around his method that allows for every sprite in the game to be displayed. I also developed a tool which scanned the entire disc of both games for sprite sheet locations, and efforts are being made to document the findings of these log files. The sheer amount of unused content found has been overwhelming from both games, and will take quite some time to document and include in the viewer. Anyone interesting in seeing the current status of this project can view the progress made below:
