And it will go higher than that. You can get thousands of coins in both games legitimately.
I just played around with the code you found.

121C8138 00001111 gave me 4,369 coins, although it took a while for the counter to make it's way that high--the change wasn't instant.

Actually, Both my codes were working in the New Super Mario Bros ROM. But when I took it to my game, only 174 and 42 coins would work. This is odd.
