  • Problems installing Homebrew on my Wii console.

First of all, I want to point out that I followed this guy's video tutorial:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or_CJWMiXd4

I also want to point out that I did not install bootmii (because the tutorial mentioned above said it wasn't necessary), but it looks like every other tutorial lists it as another important step. Is it really necessary? Keep in mind my main intentions with softmodding my Wii are to use emulators and ROM's.

Now, I've already installed the Homebrew Channel and so far it's just nothing but bubbles. I've been trying to install the Homebrew Browser, but it doesn't seem to work (I keep getting "Read error -81 occurred error message. Retrying..." repeating over and over again).

From what I understand, it's not working because a certain website is down. What, then, can I do? Is there any alternative way of getting homebrew emulators on my Wii console? Am I at a point where I really do need to install bootmii? If I've already installed HBC, is it safe to click on the letterbomb again to install just bootmii?

So I don't even need the Homebrew Browser? I just need to install emulators by placing them in the apps folder and making sure they end with "\boot.dol"? Do I need to install BootMii for these?

You don't need BootMii to install emulators on your Wii.
Just put your emulators in your "apps" folder. Your apps folder should be on the root of your SD card.

        For example:
Say I want to use fceugx (an NES emulator)
I would put the fceugx folder in my "apps" folder. (This folder should have the following: boot.dol, icon, meta, readme and settings)
Then on the root of my SD card I would create a new folder called "fceugx."
I would then open the fceugx folder I just created and create a new folder called "roms." (This is where you put all of your NES roms.)
I would put my roms in the new roms folder I just created.
Then I would eject my SD card and put it back into my Wii. Then I would go to the Homebrew channel, an icon that says "FCEUGX" should appear.
Choose that icon and pick your rom and you are done.

Okay, I was able to get one emulator running (I chose an N64 emulator). Thanks.

            Good job man.
I heard the N64 emulator isn't that good, but hey it's something.

Yup, you don't need the homebrew store. I don't know, but this late after it's life it could be down for good. Download your emulators from here:

              http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Emulator
Most of the emulators should come with 2 folders, one of the folders will go in the app folder, the other will go on the root of the sd card. The one in the root of the sd card is usually where you put roms and cheat files.

                  Never even heard of it.
I haven't touched my Wii for a long time, however, I will take a look at it.
Thanks for letting me know about it.

Sure thing. Its much better and its updated ever so often. Check out gc forever to dl it.

It has exellent usb 2.0 support and also zipped rom support was added back. Also it fixes more games.

Im not sure what all works now, but Paper Mario is now fully playable on it. It will flicker in a few areas even with framebuffered texures on. Also a few bosses may require the interpreter core.
