  • (PSX FF7) Modified CLOUD.BCX proof-of-concept

Using data from MD1STIN.BSX (the first field you find yourself in at the beginning of the game), I've modified CLOUD.BCX (Cloud's field model) to make him a red-uniformed Shinra guard, while retaining his facial data. This would allow you to play the entire game with Cloud as a Shinra guard (with the possible exception of Cloud-in-a-dress, and similar scenes).

I've included a video of the intro:

...and a video of some Cosmo Canyon game play:

...and I've attached a copy of the modified BCX file, in case anyone wants to use something like CDProg or CDMage to insert the file at the same LBA as the original, and play around.

The point of this POC is that I can now take any field model in the game and make it a playable character. This is a necessary step in a mod I'm working on. Next, on to battle models, and finally world map models.

After a considerable amount of reverse-engineering and mapping out relevant battle models (and having already done so with field models), I've completed a proof-of-concept (though, fully functional) replacement model for Cloud in both battle and field modules - in his original, Shinra MP uniform. As mentioned in the video descriptions, this probably gives away a little too much of my intentions for the FF7 prequel mod, Adamant, but it's worth it if it keeps people interested and illustrates what one can do with the type of information I've mapped out in previous threads

I've attached a copy of the above two models. If anyone wants to use them, simply use an app like CDProg to insert them into an FF7 ISO at the correct LBA automatically.

I'm not interested in either. Incidentally, making and applying graphical mods to the PC version(s) of FF7 is quite simple, and has been done considerably already. No one has been able to do so in the PSX version in any real way until now

After reverse-engineering and mapping out Cloud's world map model, WM0.BSZ (and having already done so with field and battle models), I've completed a proof-of-concept (though, fully functional) replacement model for Cloud on the world map.

I've attached a copy of this custom world map mod file, in case anyone else is interested in using it for anything.

Here is an interesting idea I had: there are certain places in the game where your character model changes and not in battle to something less detailed but I can't really recall an exact place since I haven't played the game in many years. I do remember the part that stood out was in that area around the beach resort town where you can buy a house where there is part that clouds comes real close to the screen as you're moving him around the area, this seemed to be a different model than the mainly used ones. Can these models be replaced too if they aren't the same which they might be the same but just looked really less detailed in my memory.

There aren't any less-detailed field models of Cloud to my knowledge...in Costa Del Sol or otherwise. There a few modified models (Cloud with Buster Sword, Cloud dressed as a girl, etc), but nothing of the sort you're referring to, unless it's completed eluded me.

Perhaps the pixelated, polygon chibi models just looked bad when pressed up against your screen in large size?

Thats what I figured but long ago it looked like in certain places they looked better and in a few places they looked worst. If I ever replay the game and notice it (probably won't) I will post something about it.

                    OK.

There is the fact that some texture data (including the faces/eyes/etc) for main characters is stored in individual field DAT files, and this data could be different between fields. I don't think this would affect the rest of the characters' bodies, but it very well might.

I'd confirmed this earlier, but didn't have a good test initially (I replaced Cloud's 4th sword with a Shinra MP's head as a joke at the time). In playable character battle models, weapon 'part' data begins with 4 bytes of zeros, followed by the equivalent of a normal part's bone description data (8 bytes in size). After this, the data is identical in form to any other part data set, and so any part, weapon or otherwise, can be used to replace any weapon (yep, you could beat down an enemy with a dragon's tail, or Rufus' arm).

In this case, I've replaced Cloud's 2nd weapon with that of the enemy Wolfmeister. Apparently, I'd forgotten how huge Wolfmeister's sword is, but it's certainly worth a good laugh...this makes the Buster Sword look completely reasonable

You should get Sephiroths sword and that would be a fans dream weapon for Cloud.

That would be fairly easy. Perhaps I'll do so a little later,.
