What emulator did you test this code on? You can't use a 16-bit write on an address that isn't 16-bit aligned.

PEC has a habit of showing 8bit codes with a 16bit code type, basically anything that ends in an odd number should be an 8bit code. I would use no$psx and use its memory edit to actually look at your code and edit it to see if the results are the same.

no buttons press then search for 0000 hex
hold L3+X then search for 0240 hex
