  • Some posts not being added to "Latest Activity"

Whenever I post new codes in my hacking thread, it isn't added to the "Latest Activity" page. I also noticed the same thing for at least one other hacker (BigBossman).

Example, I just posted this code, but it's not on the Latest Activity page: http://gamehacking.org/vb/forum/vide...794#post193794

EDIT: Although I noticed that this post was added to the Recent Activity page.

Thanks; looking into it. At a glance, I'm not sure anything from the Hacker Threads forum is being displayed in the Latest Activity page.

Also, this is the first time I've ever looked at that page, heh.

This might be fixed, for new posts starting now. Let me know if you see it recurring.

Ah, now I think I understand. Latest Activity only shows new threads, not new posts. Hence if you post a reply to an existing thread, it doesn't display in Latest Activity (which is a really stupid design, actually). Did it ever work differently, or is this the first time you've looked at it (like me)?

Update: After scouring the web, it looks like other people have complained about this too, but vBulletin has just replied that they don't really care, and that Latest Activity was only meant to show latest thread. No one seems to have made a decent mod or workaround for this, either. Personally, I'll never use this feature anyway, preferring to just look at the forums, then any updated threads within, but it is pretty annoying that vB has taken this approach to so many things lately. I can't see how that tab is useful at all in its current state.

Update 2: Also, Latest Activity within a specific forum seems to show posts (replied) in subscribed threads only.

Yeah...if vBulletin doesn't improve in both quality and service by the next time we do a major overhaul/update like this, we'll be moving to a new forum system. That won't be for at least a couple of years, though.

Thanks for looking into it LB. The previous forum was setup to show all new posts on one page. Convenient, but not a big deal without it.

Many new posts in old threads are making it to the top of the Latest Activity page, but new posts in the Hacker Threads are not.

Example, this new post to an old thread made it to the top of the Latest Activity page: http://gamehacking.org/vb/forum/misc...887#post193887
                As well as others.

You had mentioned this: "At a glance, I'm not sure anything from the Hacker Threads forum is being displayed in the Latest Activity page."
                Is that fixable?

EDIT: I also noticed that whenever a new post goes on the Latest Activity page, it always shows the original/first post, not the newest one. The old forum always showed the newest posts.

EDIT2: In the old forum it was called "What's New". Hate to keep asking about this, but that was my go to page whenever I logged on. Very convenient.

It looks like that thread is near the top because of the timestamp of the thread creation. dlevere's original post was more recent than the original post of the thread right below it in the Latest Activity page. Am I missing something here?

I said that before I realized that Latest Threads is using new threads rather than new posts. Try creating a test thread in Hacker Threads - it should show up at the top of the Latest Activity feed.

Do you mean the main Latest Activity page, or the Latest Activity page for a specific forum? Note that they're different and behave differently (this is a vB5 thing, and doesn't seem changeable).

As for sorting by latest post and/or displaying the latest post in a thread rather than displaying the first post in the thread, for the main forum page Latest Activity, it seems vBulletin has decided not to support that for some strange reason. Here's a discussion of some of the details:

                  https://www.vbulletin.com/forum/foru...t-reply-action

I agree that it's a step backward, and I don't understand why vBulletin would do this (or several other things they've done in vB5). That said, I don't think a lot of people use this feature, so if you're concerned that people won't see your latest hacking work because of this, I don't think you have anything to worry about; I never look at that page and would just as soon remove it entirely. For that matter, would it make sense to just remove it, since it's not really useful in its current state?

I have a theory. It's possible that it is only putting new posts on the Latest Activity page if the original thread was made after the start of the new forum. I made a test post to an old thread in the Retro Hacking page and it didn't show up on the Latest Activity page. However, other new posts in Retro Hacking that were in threads that were made after the launch of the new forum are showing up correctly.

EDIT: Didn't see your latest post until after I posted this.

EDIT2: In all of this, I'm referring to the main Latest Activity page.

I'm willing to entertain this theory, if you can show me a single example which contradicts my observation: that new threads are being shown in Latest Activity entirely based on their first post date and time.

I guess I'm pushing this too hard. I appreciate your help with this. I think we should keep the page even in it's current state.

                          Some good news...

I figured out how to solve one of the problems. One the right side of the page, there is a "Filter" option. Changing "New Topics" to Off makes it so that the newest post shows up instead of the original/first post.

No, not at all. I just want to know if there's any reason to think I'm seeing something incorrectly here. My observation has been that new threads are being shown in Latest Activity entirely based on their first post date and time. Have you seen any exceptions to this? If so, please let me know. Otherwise, it's working as vBulletin (foolishly) intended :P

That said, I won't remove the feature if you find it useful.

Cool. Too bad there doesn't seem to be a setting to make that the default...
