The following ten words are examples of what you can be expected to know the definitions of on an SAT vocabulary exam.
1. Quincunx
2. Sesquipedalian
3. Pycnocline
4. Syzygy
5. Dendrochronology
6. Acquiesce
7. Spinnaker
8. Mamluk
9. Fakir
10. Desiccant
Six of the words on this list failed this site's spell-check, but ARE spelled correctly, to give you an idea of how advanced these words are (and I already know the definitions of them).
I have not failed to correctly spell (due to lack of knowledge) any word that has been presented to me in over twenty years. My spelling + definition vocabulary is around 100,000 words. My spelling-alone vocabulary is closer to 500,000 words. No, those numbers are NOT typos.
In short, the percentage (based on usage) of the words I know how to spell is over 99.9999 percent.
One final fact: though the word "the" is the most commonly used word in the English language, the word "set" has the most accepted definitions, the word "say" has the most synonyms, and the word "and" is used more often than "the" in the English Bible.
