There are 28 Mega Evolutions so far discovered, including ones for Pokemon who didn't really need it in the first place (Lucario, Garchomp, and Aerodactyl, I'm looking at YOU!). However, the idea of giving the game's penultimate Pokemon, Mewtwo, TWO Mega Evolutions, both with the highest stat total yet assigned to a Pokemon, at 780, was a good idea--people loved to see Mewtwo as reigning supreme as the "number-one Uber-Pokemon", and that was taken away from it in the fourth and fifth generations with the arrival of Arceus. Now, Arceus has had to step down and Mewtwo has once again assumed the throne as the game series' "Most Powerful Pokemon."
Now, a final fact: the total number of Pokemon, alternate formes and Mega Evolutions brings the total number of Pokemon variants to 780...the same number as Mega Mewtwo X or Y's base stat total!
It was as if Pokemon X and Y are not about Xerneas and Yveltal, but meant as a cryptic tribute to the mighty Mewtwo, long may he reign!
