  • CodeBreaker PS2 codes, certain ones not working anymore

Not sure why, never had a problem until I used the cb2util program to re-convert my text codes into cb format.

The codes that don't work anymore are my newest codes I created for Hitman Blood Money (Carry more weapons)they worked until I converted/decrypted CodeJunkies "All weapons Rookie" code and put in onto the list and now my codes seem as they are obsolete. I know it's not the joker code because there are other codes the use the joker and work just fine.

At first I thought it because I modified some of my weapons but it's not the case because I manually froze the three addresses using cheat engine on pcsx2 and they work just fine.

Overall, I suspect the cb2util had something to do with it. Maybe I should delete the CB save file off and start over even though I'll lose all the other codes I input.

BTW I'm using the CB 9.2 ELF that has had the codelist removed to save space on my memory card.

Just as I thought, formatted card then re-input codes and now they are working again. Bad thing is, I lost all the other codes I had put in...

That's okay, I made sure I backed them up in text format. Re-entering them is the annoying part because I'm not using that cb2util thing again as it's the reason for the problems in the first place. Better safe than sorry.

Codebreaker does have a few unknown strange bugs. I had the same thing a long ago when I found codes for Ratchet and Clank 1. I couldn't figure out why codes I added to the list suddenly stopped working. It took me hours and I got pissed and deleted all it from the memory card a couple times and things suddenly worked again.

I was fine until I started using the cb2util program. For some reason it (CB 9.2) also said my memory card didn't have any free space on it. I deleted all the file off, input new codes and it still didn't work. Formatting was the only way to fix it.

TBH it was only the codes I added to it after using the cb2util program, all the other codes still worked. I may just have to use pelvicthrustman's PS2 patch engine and insert the codes directly with no need for another program.

CB 9.2 has a soft-limit on the file size. If memory serves, version 9.x allocates 2 MB in RAM for the decompressed code file, but doesn't do any checking to see if that limit is exceeded as new codes come in. When you do exceed it, the listing becomes corrupted, and the file becomes unrecoverable when you save it. With the compression the CB uses, that 2 MB of memory equates to somewhere around 1.4 MB on the card, but it can vary quite a lot. The memory allocation was increased to 4 MB in version 10, so cb2util will probably happily create files that the CB will immediately use to clobber itself, partly because it can't enforce the limit properly without requiring you to specify your version, and partly because this limitation isn't well-known.

The issue can present itself in a number of ways, from codes not working, to codes appearing mangled, to odd, graphical hiccups in the menus.

Maybe this isn't your issue, but I suspect it is, based on the other dumb limitation I'm about to explain.

If the CB is complaining about space, that's because it's stupid. It doesn't take the size of its save file into account when computing space requirements, so putting a 1 MB code file on a card with 6.5 MB of other saves makes updating the code file impossible later. It sees that 7.5 MB of the card is used, and that it needs 1.01 MB of space to save, and errors out.

When i converted the text back to cb format it was 3 kb. I think the cb corrupted my card and then that's when the problems started.

Yeah, that's possible. I don't remember every trouble report I ever heard, and I could swear that most of the times that file randomly became corrupt it was somebody using the hard-drive features, but there's always that separate settings/history file, if nothing else. That used to go sour somewhat frequently, even if you only used official CBC files to update the code list.

I only have a slim PS2 so that can't be the problem. Get this, I converted the text file which was 6 kb to cb format which made it 3 kb. decrypted the 3 kb cb and the text file was 12 kb. The games in the list were duplicated about 6 times each.
