Nintendo has taken a new step in the cross-play. Although 3DS and Wii U have such functionality in games like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, now the company wants to take this to the next level. As you said a representative from Nintendo to VG247: "We can confirm that the functionality between platforms is possible in certain titles playable on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, in addition to other systems of video games not made by Nintendo".
