  • Nintendo Releases Shantae (GBC) & Earthbound (SNES)

    By Cauterize

For countless years gamers hoping to legally enjoy the likes of Shantae or Earthbound have unfortunately been faced with daunting price tags. With both of these classics demanding triple figures at auction on a regular basis, retro gamers on a budget can rejoice as Nintendo has released this duo onto Virtual Console for a fraction of their current value.

This move, if anything, comes as a real surprise to gamers worldwide where Earthbound is concerned. For countless years the Super Nintendo RPG (which never saw release in Europe) has been the center of much debate as to why Nintendo was refusing to re-release Itoi's epic.

Controversy aside, if you're yet to experience Earthbound for the first time, we very much suggest you invest in this well priced digital download. Every aspect of this timeless classic is a real joy to behold, and one which single-handedly re-sculpted the RPG gaming landscape.

Shantae on the other hand was WayForward's flagship release of 2002, one which went on to immortalize the developers as neo-retro geniuses. The bold release for the Game Boy Color pushed the underpowered handheld to its upper echelons whilst providing absolutely fantastic gameplay to boot. Since then the Californian based studio has produced many fantastic titles, many of which hidden within brands and franchises you'd usually dismiss - take Wendy: Every Witch Way and Batman: The Brave and the Bold for example.

So if you're yet to make a Virtual Console purchase this month, we very much suggest you stretch your budget and indulge in two (currently overpriced in cartridge form) retro classics to make the most of your Wii U and 3DS.

I'd still like an Earthbound cart. I'm just not rich enough to justify obtaining one yet.

Why not on regular Wii? I mean it's not like it can't run on it, it runs just fine on SNES9X GX on Wii.

I guess that means they're won't be a 4.4 firmware that blocks out current save exploits.

I wonder if you can view the guide while playing the game without lag. (in the article says optimized I like to know how?)

You can already play games on the controller without lag, why would there be lag for a static player guide?

And the optimized part probably means that the guide was optimized so that it looks good on the controller and not that it's a mere scan of the original thing.

Ah, EarthBound- One of the greatest games and RPGs ever created! I rank it right up there with Chrono Trigger, personally.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't the prices gone down ever since it was released on Virtual Console? The last average I knew of for EarthBound cartridges is $150. It should be even less than that now that EarthBound has resurged and is 'common' again.

                          You should be fine.
Remember to take it sleazy and stay epic!

It's still hovering around $150 for just a cartridge. I don't know how much a VC release really effects the market for these old, collectible games. You've been able to download a ROM and play it on dozens of devices for years, and the price hasn't moved much. The only thing a VC release for the Wii U does is make it possible to purchase and play on one device legally. And it's a console that I don't believe is terribly popular right now.

A price tag of $150 for a game isn't exactly chump-change. If you just have money to piss away, all right, but if that's a month's entertainment budget, you'd be giving up an awful lot of other diversions to obtain a game you've already played.

I could just make a reproduction of the game on a real cart like I did Seiken Densetsu 3 aka Secret of Mana 2 and play it on my Snes and save tons of money.
