  • Monster Energy Drink Sued After Teen's Death

The mother of a teenager who died from cardiac arrhythmia last year is blaming his death on Monster Beverage Corp., alleging in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that his death was caused by habitually drinking the company's energy drink.

Alex Morris, 19, went into cardiac arrest during the early morning hours of July 1 and was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The lawsuit filed in Alameda County Superior Court alleges Morris would not have died if he did not drink two cans of Monster's energy drink every day for the three years before his death, including the day he died.

Morris' mother, Paula Morris, is listed as a plaintiff in the case.

The lawsuit comes after the family of 14-year-old Anais Fournier, of Maryland, also sued the company last year after she consumed two 24-ounce cans of Monster and died.

"Our allegations in the lawsuits are the same and that's the peoples deaths were caused by these energy drinks and, more specifically, the defendants failure to warn about the dangers," said Alexander Wheeler, an attorney representing the plaintiffs in both cases.

Monster representatives did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The Corona-based company said previously in Fournier's case that no blood test was performed to confirm that the girl died of "caffeine toxicity" as the lawsuit claimed, saying she died of natural causes brought on by pre-existing conditions.

Monster and other energy drinks have received increased scrutiny in recent months. The Food and Drug Administration is investigating reports of deaths linked to energy drinks, including five that cite Monster beverages, but the agency noted that the reports don't prove the drinks caused the deaths.

San Francisco city attorney Dennis Herrera is also suing Monster Beverage for marketing its energy drinks to children, saying the products pose severe health risks.

I would recommend staying away from them.
I have been practically addicted to them recently, until Tuesday.

On Tuesday it was my turn for the random drug test at work, and since I'm drug free I was not worried.
Directly before I took the wizz quiz I had finished a Monster.
When finished and the lady looked at the cup, she said It was showing a non-negative for 'benzos' (pills such as Xanax).

Now my sample is being sent to a lab for further testing.
It either has to be the Monster or the various different vitamins I take that made that happen, but it will be up to 8 more business days until I know the results.
The only reason I'm thinking the Monster might have something to do with it is because one of the ingredients listed is Benzoic Acid, and it at least has the word 'benzo' in it.

Now I'm kinda worried that I might lose my job of nearly 12 years :-(

My dad loves this drink, the "import" version especially. I only like the Kona blend.

Sorry to hear that Mez. Have you Googled whether or not Benzoic Acid can cause a "non-negative" response for 'benzos'?

          Keep us posted.

That's messed up. I had to stay away from poppy seed bagels when I was taking piss tests. They show up positive for opiates.

I've encountered that before. I roll my eyes when I place that does a urine test for opiates offers you free poppy seed muffins in the morning.

Now I can quit worrying, I was having paranoid thoughts like someone spiked my Gatorade I had left in the fridge at work or something lol.

                    ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING?!

Are you really stupid enough to not know that pumping your child full of tons of sugar is harmful? Do you really need a sign on the can that says "make sure your 10 year old kid doesn't drink 5 of these in a row?"

I don't feel bad for anyone in this situation. I don't feel bad for the parents who let their children drink these drinks. I don't feel bad about the people who died from drinking these drinks. And I don't feel bad for Monster. They all fucked up, and now they have to pay a price. I'm sorry if you think I am evil for saying this, but it's the truth. If you're a parent, then don't let your child drink an energy drink. Any energy drink, THEY DON'T NEED IT!
