  • World of Warcraft Film Begins Shooting Early 2014

Published on June 4th, 2013 By George X

Earlier this year Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) was announced as Director of the long-awaited movie based on World of Warcraft. Legendary Pictures finally appears to be ready to move forward with production. Producer Charles Roven confirmed to SlashFilm that World of Warcraft: The Movie 3D IMAX Experience (suggested title) begins shooting in early 2014.

Legendary still hasn’t announced a release date or any plot details, but we can assume that the release date could be late 2015 and the plot will revolve arround the Human and Orc conflict.

Seeing as the game is losing players, they are probably just trying to gain them back. We all know that Hollywood is first in line to ruin a video game movie. Heck, they should let Peter Jackson do it, it would be really awesome if he did a Zelda movie. But seeing how the Mario Bros. was done Nintendo probably won't let it happen.

True, the first MK movie wasn't too bad.

Mortal Kombat was on a few hours ago, I managed to catch the last half hour of it.

Want to know why video game movies have such a bad rap?

Uwe Boll (German pronunciation: [ˈuːvə ˈbɔl]; born June 22, 1965) is a German director, producer and screenwriter, whose work includes several films adapted from video games. He finances his own films through his Boll KG and Event Film Productions production companies. Many of his films are based on video game franchises, produced on a low budget and some are direct-to-video.

He has been described as the "Ed Wood of the 21st Century" due to making one critically panned movie after another. Yet, he is notable for getting famous actors such as Oscar winner Ben Kingsley, Ray Liotta, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren to star in his movies.

Boll is best known for adapting video games into movies, having directed and produced a number of such adaptations, including House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, Alone in the Dark II, BloodRayne, BloodRayne II: Deliverance, BloodRayne: The Third Reich, In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, Postal, and Far Cry.

As of May 2011, House of the Dead (for which VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever described Boll as a "cinematic train wreck") and Alone in the Dark appear on the Internet Movie Database's Bottom 100 films list. Three of his films (Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, and BloodRayne) also appeared on GT Countdown's "Top 10 Worst Video Game Movies"; all were in the top five, with only Super Mario Bros. (at number 2) preventing them all from being in the top three; BloodRayne was ranked number one. In a review of Alone in the Dark, Rob Vaux states that the movie makes other "bad" movie directors feel better in comparison: "'It's okay,' they'll tell themselves, 'I didn't make Alone in the Dark.'" Another reviewer wrote that Alone in the Dark was "so poorly built, so horribly acted and so sloppily stitched together that it's not even at the straight-to-DVD level." For example, in one scene a character who was "killed" can be seen getting up as the actor prematurely made the move to get off the set. One critic has dubbed him as the "Jonas Brothers of movie directors".

When rumors surfaced that Boll had expressed interest in a Metal Gear Solid movie, and claimed to have been given a script to read, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima responded in his audioblog HIDECHAN, "Absolutely not! I don't know why Uwe Boll is even talking about this kind of thing. We've never talked to him. It's impossible that we'd ever do a movie with him." Boll later stated that he only thought he was doing the film because he was tricked by someone named Scithe who claimed to work for Konami.

Boll also made a bid to direct the upcoming World of Warcraft movie, but was turned away by the owners of the Warcraft franchise, Blizzard Entertainment who said: "We will not sell the movie rights, not to you…especially not to you." Boll responded "Because it’s such a big online game success, maybe a bad movie would destroy that ongoing income, what the company has with it."

The second movie was pure crap, it tried to do a MK Trilogy thing throwing every character into the movie from MK2-UMK3. It was pure garbage with some characters only showing up for 5 mins or so and never see them again or their role was so small that you only see them briefly and not have much of an impact on the story. The worst scene was the fight with Sonya and Mileena where they got into some kind of mud wrestling and Sonya got all dirty including her white shirt (they were in the desert in this scene), then after the fight she was clean as a whistle. I didn't know they had dry cleaning in the Wasteland let alone a shower to clean up.

I thought it sucked too, I mean they got rid of Lambert as Rayden; possibly the best actor in the movie besides Shou. Everyone would have probably liked some good fight scenes from Scorpion & Sub-Zero. The guy they had as the new Rayden sucked IMO.

The best video game movie ever? Wreck it Ralph, period.

                World Of Wacraft Film Delayed

                By Graham Smith

The Warcraft movie has been rattling around Hollywood for years. First we were afraid, we were petrified, but rumours that Uwe Boll was going to make the movie turned out not to be true.

Then Evil Dead/Spider-Man director Sam Raimi was attached to direct, but had to drop out due to other commitments, and we kept thinking we could never live without him by our side.

Then Duncan Jones, the director of Moon and Source Code and a PC gamer, took over the project, and we knew we would not crumble.

It’s taken all the strength we’ve had not to fall apart, though now the movie has been delayed further into March 2016, to make way for Star Wars’ December 2015 release.

That makes sense. JJ Abrams’ Star Wars is likely to be huge regardless of whether it’s good or bad, and a movie like Warcraft, even with the recognizable name, is going to struggle alongside.

Much like its director, the film has gone through its fair share of writers in its time. Charles Leavitt currently fills the role, having previously written the script for the likes of Blood Diamond and K-PAX. Leavitt’s seems like the hardest task, because he’s got to pull the disparate threads of Warcraft lore together in a way that makes sense in a two-hour movie.

Not much is known about the plot so far, except that it’s about the war between Orcs and Humans and that it shows both sides of the story. When Jones last spoke about the movie at Blizzcon earlier in November, he cited Avatar, Game of Thrones, Batman and Gladiator as points of reference as far as the film’s tone. Does his use of the word “gritty” mean the film won’t have gnomes flying helicopters? A real shame.

                But we will survive.

                  • Dominic Cooper -- Captain America movies, Dead Man Down, My Week with Marilyn, An Education, Mamma Mia!

Despite previous rumors that Colin Farrell had been offered a lead role in Warcraft, he is not mentioned in the film's press release.

Production is set to begin in January 2014, and as reported earlier, the release date is currently March 11, 2016. Other details we already know about the upcoming movie:
                  • Duncan Jones (Moon) is the director, and he's played every Blizzard game.
                  • It will be a mix of live action and CG focusing on a Humans vs. Orcs origin story.
                  • Industrial Light and Magic (the visual effects studio behind Star Wars) will be creating the Orcs.
                  • Durotan and Lothar will go head-to-head in the movie's story.
