  • The Wolverine Trailer

    By Angela Watercutter

Stop us if you've heard this one before: You wake up next to a woman who shouldn’t be there and then you realize you've impaled her with your Adamantium claw. Then you wake up again and realize: It was all just a dream!

Ok, that's probably never happened to you – presuming you’re not a mutant — but that's what life is like for our scruffy friend Logan (Hugh Jackman) in the latest trailer for The Wolverine. And that’s just the beginning. After teases and tweases, this latest clip is the most thorough look yet at what’s in store in director James Mangold’s flick about Wolvie's time in Japan.

Following Logan’s big, bad dream — is there anything sadder than hearing him tell Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) “I’ll never hurt you, or anyone, ever again”? — the trailer finds the X-Man in Japan hiding from his Wolverine identity and meeting a man he once saved in battle who tells him, “I can end your eternity, make you mortal.” Will he do it? Hard to tell, but he definitely does something to make his lightning-quick healing powers recede.

What else? Oh yeah, Silver Samurai! It’s not much, but there are a few seconds here of Logan’s sometimes enemy/sometimes ally. (Face off!) We also get a few ninja and a quick bit of Viper. Also, a lot of Wolverine generally kicking ass – on the ground and on a moving train. Color us stoked.

The Wolverine hits theaters July 26.

Interview: James Mangold Discusses All Things Related to ‘The Wolverine’

James Mangold has directed a little bit of everything — drama, romance, biopic, action, thriller, western – and now he’s attempting to bring all that experience to the superhero genre. On July 26th he’ll present The Wolverine, the big screen return of everyone’s favorite adamantium skeleton mad man.

Hugh Jackman is once again putting on the claws for a solo adventure that’ll take the character to Japan in search of a cure to his immortality.

Last year Avengers made the most $$$ at the box office. The Dark Knight Rises would have made even more, if not for that theater massacre.

I love the X-Men movies. I hope they continue to keep making them. It's a type of movie that can keep making more sequels/prequels. There's so many plot possibilities. I'd like to see one made where there is a full blown war between mutants vs. humans.

I just hated how the 3rd ended and how Juggernaut was a mutant when he isn't and is Xavier's Step-Brother and then how Cyclops and Xavier die. WTF is up with that shit? I know in the alternate ending or at the end credits Xavier took over some comma patients body but they killed it with that shit.

I actually liked that ending part... especially how they mentioned that possibility at the beginning of the movie, so it's not like they just pulled it out of their azz without any tie in or explanation. A lot of people who saw the movie still don't know about that ending part. My friends and younger brother didn't know either, and when I informed them, they thought I was BSing.

Still killing off the main characters was a dumb move, I mean Cyclops dies and so does Jean Grey and to some extent Xavier so now we have mainly Wolverine which has his own movies. Speaking of Wolverine in the Origins movie they fucked that part up with Xavier walking when in Xmen First Class he stopped walking way younger and wasn't Sabertooth his brother? but looks totally different in the first Xmen movie with no ties to Wolverine. They just screwed up the stories so much but I did enjoy them except that 3rd and I will be seeing this new Wolverine movie.

Xavier is alive, wait until the credits finish. Marvel has been doing that a lot here lately with their movies.

The Wolverine claws its way to $21 million Friday

By Lindsey Bahr on Jul 27, 2013 at 2:18 P.M.

This weekend was always going to belong to The Wolverine. As the only film opening in wide release, James Mangold’s dark take on the clawed mutant opened strong and walked away with about $21 million on Friday, which includes the $4 million it made in theaters that began showing the movie at 10 p.m. on Thursday night.

Also, 3,063 out of its 3,924 locations are showing the X-Men pic in 3-D. The $120 million Hugh Jackman-starrer should easily make at least $60 million by the end of the weekend, slightly lower than some estimates — including ours — which placed it in the $70 million range.

The opening is not quite as strong as 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which had a $34.4 million Friday, and did not benefit from 3-D surcharges. Out of all the X-Men films, The Wolverine is tracking on the low end of the franchise, sitting between 2000′s X-Men which opened at $20.8 million on a Friday in mid-July, and X-Men: First Class which had a $21.4 million Friday.

In second place, James Wan’s possession horror movie The Conjuring experienced a normal 56.6% drop off and made $7.4 million on Friday in 3,022 locations. The modest $20 million flick has made $69.1 million domestically, and this is only its second weekend in theaters.

Universal’s Despicable Me 2 took third place on Friday with $4.8 million. In its four weeks in theaters, the $76 million sequel has made an estimated $295.2 million domestically. By comparison, Monsters University has been in theaters for six weeks and has made about $253.4 million to date domestically.

Turbo continues to stay in the top five despite a rocky start. It also blew past last week’s dismal R.I.P.D. which dropped about 63% to ninth place in its second week. The Ryan Reynolds-voiced animated comedy brought in about $4.0 million on Friday for Fox. The $135 million family movie has made $46.5 million so far.

Coming in fifth place was Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups 2, with $3.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $93.8 million in its third weekend in theaters.

The ’90s-set R-rated teen sex comedy The To-Do List opened in 591 theaters this weekend with a $590K Friday, and Blue Jasmine, Woody Allen’s latest, made $175,991 on Friday in six theaters in New York and Los Angeles. With such a strong cast and even more positive reviews, Blue Jasmine should enjoy a healthy run as awards season movies start taking over the theaters.

Sundance hits Fruitvale Station and The Way, Way Back also went into wide release this weekend, but only Fruitvale Station made the top 10 on Friday with $1.4 million. The Way, Way Back settled in at 11th place with $970K, and boasting a domestic total of $6.6 million.

Check back tomorrow for the full box office report.

I watched the movie this past Sunday and I was a little disappointed with it, it started slow and took a while to take off but it never had killer fights till mid and last battles but the overall story is good but it needed some more mutant action.

My younger brother saw it. He also said it was disappointment. I'm still going to see it though.
