I'm trying to set all the Atari 2600 ROM (.a26) files to always load with the emulator Stella when the ROM files are double clicked. Currently, the .a26 files have no designation. When I right-click on one of the files and choose "Open With..." from the context menu, browse to the Stella.exe file and select it... nothing happens. It doesn't appear in the window with all the other programs to be selected. How come this is happening? How do I get it to work (get it to designate all my .a26 files to always open with Stella.)

I just downloaded Stella to try this, and it worked properly for me.
I do the same thing with my other systems, with emulators that can open files directly like that (FCEU, Fusion Etc.).
Although the ROM I attempted it with was .bin extension which I use for Genesis, the program would still show in the menu.
What OS are you trying this on? I didn't try on my Windows 7 machine, only XP.
Another attempt would be to use Windows Key+E then go to Tools->Folder Options->File Types->New and manually create it.
Edit:
Maybe the path to the executable is too long?
I put emulators in a folder named Portables inside of Program Files:
C:\Program Files\!Portables\Stella-3.8.1\32-bitLast edited by Mezmorize; 05-12-2013, 08:34:02 AM.

I just solved the problem. I went into the Control Panel > Appearance and Themes > Folder Options. I deleted the .a26 extension and then recreated it. I chose the Stella.exe from my Stella 3.8.1 directory. But it still wasn't working. For some reason, the extension kept trying to use the Stella.exe from my old, non-existing Stella 3.4 directory, even though that directory no longer even exists and even though I specifically kept choosing the Stella.exe in my Stella 3.8.1 directory. It must be a lil bug in Windows XP, but I figured it out. I had to go into the "Editing Action for Type" and manually add "%1" to the end of the path "C:\Stella\Stella 3.8.1\Stella.exe"
So it had to look like this "C:\Stella\Stella 3.8.1\Stella.exe" "%1"
Then I had to select the check box "Use DDE"
After doing all that, I finally got it to work. How I figured it out was I looked at how my emulator Gambatte looked because I have Gambatte set up to open all my Game Boy Color ROMs and it works fine.
Thanks for trying to help though.Last edited by OldSchoolGamer; 05-12-2013, 08:57:58 AM.Now broadcasting from the underground command post. Deep in the bowels of a hidden bunker. Somewhere under the brick & steel of a nondescript building. We've once again made contact w/ our leader, OSG

My issue is solved. And my paths/directories do have spaces in them and they are still recognized. Now broadcasting from the underground command post. Deep in the bowels of a hidden bunker. Somewhere under the brick & steel of a nondescript building. We've once again made contact w/ our leader, OSG
