  • Top 10 Video Game Hoaxes of All Time

    By Riley Little

Written by Game Rant's Riley Little and Kyle Matthews.

The need to witness or unlock secret content in games has always been somewhat of a primal instinct. Be they easter eggs, secret achievements/trophies, or even golden weapons - there's an obsessive compulsive need to have every facet of a game at your disposal. It's even better when you can then show off accomplishments to friends.

More often than not however, gamers learn about the existence of these things from another source, whether it be through friends, members of the esteemed press, or through hearsay on the Internet.

The only downside to learning of unlockable or secret content in a game is that the source in which the information derives from can be shady. As a result, some tips turn out to be duds, but that hasn't stopped the popularity of each hoax from reaching unparalleled levels of believability - Just look at the infamous cow level of Diablo.

Odds are that everyone has been duped by at least one rumored video game secret at some point in their lives, and Game Rant has compiled a list of the top ten most devilish video game-focused trickery of all time.

I will not be posting any news on April 1st. I will be taking that day off, having been fooled many times on that day by posting news that turned out to be April Fools jokes. dlevere.

I've never even heard of any of these hoaxes. Good thing I didn't have internet back then.

I actually owned that issue of EGM with the akuma code and I didn't bother trying at the time but what made it believable was that the games used pixels and so did Street Fighter EX plus Alpha ( which I played tons of at that time) and the graphics looked very similar with its 3d-ish pixels. So using a little photo editing it looked believable.

The one I read about Luigi in Mario 64 was a lot more interesting. There was something you had to do involving playing with a controller on the 2nd/3rd/4th port instead of #1, losing your cap and going to the course with the ship (3rd or 4th level?). The box sliding back on forth on the ship could then be smashed revealing Luigi's cap. Then he would appear in the mirror room upstairs (inside the mirror). It's been like 20 years now, but I would've sworn I saw it happen once on my launch copy. I dunno. I also remember something about a thwomp at the top of the clocktower course running away when you got up there.
