    New York City

A heavyset woman caved through an Upper East Side sidewalk last night — dropping six feet into a huge hole where she was eventually pulled out by emergency crews using a crane-like rescue unit, authorities said.

The 31 year old Queens woman was huddled up against the wall of Atomic Wings at the Blue Room Grill on the corner of East 60th Street and Second Avenue, seeking shelter from the rain while waiting for a bus, when the sidewalk below her gave way around 9:15 p.m., witnesses said.

“The woman was enormous. She had to be more than 300 pounds,” said Daniel Crumity, 44, of Queens, who watched in disbelief from a window inside the Blue Room. “The ground literally fell out from underneath her.

“It happened so fast she did not scream or anything. Everybody in the bar got up to look.”

She was taken to Cornell Hospital where she was treated for shoulder injuries and listed in stable condition.

The woman fell straight through the concrete into an area below that appeared to lead to the restaurant’s basement, witnesses added.

FDNY Fire Chief Thomas Jemmott said the woman had to be pulled up in “high-angle rescue unit” resembling a crane with cargo netting.

“Pretty sophisticated stuff,” he said. “She is a very large person, but we were able to secure her and stabilize her and lift her out of the hole.”

Messages left with the city’s Buildings Department and Transportation Department went unanswered.

I wonder what weight it wouldn't have collapsed from? Was it really because she was obese or just a case of it could have been anybody of a fairly normal weight range?

I think the fact that she was over 300 pounds contributed to it. Maybe some construction was going on in the area. That side walk probably was made in 1837.

Rescuers free woman wedged between 2 buildings

        By NIGEL DUARA

PORTLAND, OR - Portland firefighters cut a hole through concrete and used an air bag and a soapy lubricant to free an Oregon woman who fell and became stuck in a narrow opening between two buildings Wednesday morning.

The woman spent about four hours in a space 8 to 10 inches wide. Local and national cable news broadcast footage of the rescue effort and showed the woman emerging from the space at about 7:30 a.m.

Portland firefighters Fred Williams, right, and Gary Fergus check one of two holes that were cut out to free a woman who fell part of the way down the 20-foot wall and got herself stuck between two buildings in Portland, Ore., Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013. The woman spent about four hours in a space less than a foot wide Wednesday morning. In addition to the an air bag, rescuers also cut a hole and used a soapy substance to lubricate the concrete block walls to remove the woman.

The woman raised her face, clenched her fists and shouted, "Oh, my God."

Firefighters said they hadn't gotten a clear explanation of how the woman got into the predicament. Lt. Rich Chatman of the Portland fire department said she had been seen smoking or walking on the roof of a two-story building before she fell about 10 to 12 feet.

The woman was wedged about four feet above the ground before rescuers installed braces to support her. Firefighters turned on a portable heater to keep her warm in near-freezing temperatures while they dropped an air bag into the opening to slightly spread the walls.

"She was in good spirits," Chatman said. "We just tried to reassure her ... we weren't going home without her."

After rescuers cut a window-size opening in the concrete wall, Chatman climbed in to help apply the soapy substance. The woman then wiggled toward the hole as the rescue team tugged on her.

"It was so tight, it wasn't until the last foot that she could actually see me," Chatman said. "She had that look in her eye that she was coming out no matter what."

She was taken to the Oregon Health & Science University hospital and appeared to be in good health, fire Lt. Damon Simmons said. Because she's a patient, the department won't release her name unless she gives her consent, he said.

The department's Urban Search and Rescue unit who extricated the woman train for situations such as building collapses and none of the tactics used Wednesday were improvised, Simmons said.

"They're ready for when the big earthquake hits," he said.

The unit in recent years has dealt with people who have fallen into sinkholes. But Wednesday's incident was the first time firefighters had come across someone stuck exactly like the woman was, Simmons said.

"She was just so relieved," Chatman said. "She'd been there for over three hours against two cold slabs of concrete.

"Right before she went out to the ambulance, we were able to get a little hug in there."

I almost mistook this for a story that happened in the past 2 months where a large woman got lazy and instead of walking around buildings she went through a very narrow alley between them that was less than 2 feet and she ended up getting stuck and had to have people get her out.

A 100 pounds or less. The news outlets reported the story for amusement (notice the weight-related headlines used by many of them). Using her weight as the reason was just to gain readership (for the simple-minded people amused easily. See the comments section), and to subliminally ridicule her. It's due to the construction of the area. Some workers can't focus on their job, due to being distracted (read: lazy) throughout the day by the sexy women/men (whatever floats their boat) walking around.

As fun as it is to hang out in Manhattan, you're taking a gamble with your life whenever you go there. I call it "Expedition Manhattan" or "Man-eating". You never know what will fall on, or swallow you there.
