  • What's the best way to transfer my PC files from Win XP to Win 7?

I plan on getting a new computer in a few months. What's the best way to transfer my PC files from Win XP to Win 7? When I google this, there's a few ways of doing it and a few different tools that can be used. But what do you guys think is the best way?

Also, for programs like emulators, I know I will have to delete them and download their 64-bit version. But what about their configuration files?

    For example:

Would I beable to use FCEUX 'configuration settings file' on a 64-bit Win 7? Would it recognize a 32-bit XP configuration file? Or will I have to reconfigure all my emulators to the settings that I prefer?

If a program, let's say DOSBox, is located in the directory C:\DOSBox\DOSBox 0.74\ and it's configuration files point to that directory. If I were to transfer the directory to a 64-bit Win 7 computer, would it recoginze it and work fine? Or would I have to reinstall it on the new computer?

If I have a desktop shortcut folder and I changed it's default icon to an icon file located in My Pictures directory. When I transfer my files to Win 7 64-bit, if I make sure to place them in the same exact spot/directories as they were in on Win XP 32-bit, then everything should work fine, right?

I'm clueless about Win 7 and 64-bit. I've barely ever been on one. Not only that, but I don't even recall ever even using a Win Vista computer. The only time I've ever used a Vista or Win 7 computer would be at the University library and that was only to use a word processor Microsoft Word. I never explored any of those two operating systems.

Now broadcasting from the underground command post. Deep in the bowels of a hidden bunker. Somewhere under the brick & steel of a nondescript building. We've once again made contact w/ our leader, OSG

The only files affected when switching architecture are executable files, and 64-bit systems will run anything x86. Anything from your old computer will run on your new one.

You'll have to recreate shortcuts to places like document folders because the folder structure is different for personal directories.
